Napa High moves ball, still needs to work on details

Napa High’s varsity gridders outscored Justin-Siena four touchdowns to one in just 15 minutes of first-team offensive play in both teams’ first appearance under the lights this season.
Senior quarterback John Boyett rushed for two scores, including a 25-yarder, while senior running back Jake Croxdale and junior wide receiver Brandon Washington also ran for a touchdown each.
The Indians’ first-team offense faced the Braves’ first-team defense for 15 minutes then switched. After that 15 minutes, each team proceeded with its second teams for another 12 minutes each. Teams only used 40 yards of the football field.
“At times they played pretty sloppy,” second-year head coach Troy Mott said. “We have things we have to shore up but they’re things we can fix. We need to concentrate on fixing the small things. I’ve seen some really good plays out there. We’re definitely intense and focused and our mistakes are just about playing in front of a crowd, hitting other players other than teammates and playing at a higher tempo. We have a lot of juniors and this is their first varsity experience.”
Boyett steps into the big cleats of two-year varsity starter Ted LeMasters — who watched from the sidelines — for his varsity debut as signal caller. Boyett called the shots as a freshman and sophomore but switched between running back and wideout as a junior for the 9-3 Indians.
He connected with Washington twice, but most of Napa’s offense was powered by Croxdale, junior running back Dustin Alves and Boyett’s keepers.
Boyett picked up Napa’s first score, and just a handful of snaps later, Croxdale followed suit.
Boyett tossed the ball to Croxdale on the next play and he ran for 25 yards before he fumbled and Washington recovered it for his own score. Boyett grabbed another couple of carries but included Alves — who would get hit by guys twice his size and keep motoring — several times. Boyett managed a fourth Indians score with just a minute left on the clock.
Napa’s “Black Shirt” defense kept Justin-Siena scoreless for the first 71⁄2 minutes with sparkling tackles from Brett Frasier, Croxdale, Boyett, Garick Abernethey, Michael Ruffino and Robbie Steen.
“We really improved well from the Blue and Gold scrimmage from Saturday,” first-year defensive coordinator Ian MacMillan said. “The kids did exactly what we asked them to do. I’m very impressed with my middle linebackers Michael Ruffino and Jake Croxdale. Our (defensive backs) did very well, too. I can count the number of breakdowns on one hand, so that’s promising.
“I’m very pleased with how they played together and are communicating. I can see it in their eyes that they’re getting it and know they can trust each other. No role is more important than another. They worked well as a unit. There are still things we need to fix for Del Campo, some glitches that need to be worked out.”
Napa opens its season hosting Del Campo on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
“This team has really come together,” Mott added. “They’re starting to shine in a lot of the little ways. There’s a lot of communication. I like where we’re headed — in the right direction. We’ll keep working hard and hopefully get better each and every day and see our progression.”
