Napa’s new downtown garage will not only be the biggest in town, but will have something that the other three don’t have: art.

The city and county will spend $25,000 from the project’s $15.2 million budget to commission a work of art for the Main Street frontage.
Only artists who live in Napa County or have a studio here are eligible for consideration. The Napa Community Redevelopment Agency has issued a request for qualifications, with a deadline of Sept. 28.

The last time that a local public agency commissioned a work of art was in the mid-1970s when the city’s redevelopment program selected multiple sculptures for the downtown urban renewal project, officials said.
The art will occupy a niche that is nearly seven feet wide, 19 feet tall and four inches deep. The winning entry can extend beyond the garage’s brick facade 12 inches.

A mosaic, a sculpture and a work that incorporates water are among the possibilities, said Jennifer LaLiberté, the redevelopment agency’s senior project coordinator.
The four-story garage will have 484 parking spaces. It will serve county government and shoppers and employees at riverfront commercial developments.

Legal Local Artists Only? wrote on Aug 31, 2007 8:05 AM:

" I trust all local artists will be licensed and have permitted businesses to be considered for this public facility. "

" I think this is a terrific oppotunity! Calling ALL artists. Here we have an opportunity for artists to do what they do best. Create! How condescending to assume or "trust" that "…all local artists will be licensed and have permitted businesses to be considered for this public facility." I do not think that there should be a condition that the local artists must own their own "legal" businesses before being considered for this competition/commission. There are plenty of artists that don't run businesses. They create art for pleasure, for families, for friends, to profit and not to profit AND they are good at it. What if there is an aspiring artist out there who has a terrific imagination, enjoys what they do and does it well. They may have the talent, the vision, the drive to take on this type of glorious challenge. Why take second best should the first place choice artist not have their own business? This is a competition. I question if "Legal Local Artists Only?" owns their own legal business and doesn't want to go up against another local artist that blows them away. OR If this person doesn't own their own business and is limiting themselves from the start. If that is the case, please do yourself a favor and believe in yourself and your art. GO FOR IT! "
