E-mail scam alert

5 p.m.Police are warning the public to be on the lookout for an e-mail scam that promises recipients they will receive $80 for participating in an online customer satisfaction survey about the Internal Revenue Service.

The e-mail notifies the recipient that he or she has been randomly selected to participate in a survey. In return, the IRS will credit $80 to the taxpayer’s account.
In addition to the survey questions, the survey requests name and phone number of the participant and also asks for credit card information.

The objectives of the scam are to use the participants’ name and financial data to withdraw funds from the taxpayer’s bank account, run up charges on his or her credit cards or take out loans in the taxpayer’s name.
The IRS does not send unsolicited e-mail and never asks taxpayers for personal identification numbers or other financial information in this manner.

Anyone who may have been a victim of this scam is asked to call Napa police at 253-4451.

" Anyone who cannot recognize this as a scam, especially when they ask for credit card info probably should not own a computer. "

" You're right, MominNapa, but I worry so about the elderly or those folks who are new to the internet or who are just not quite as bright as you probably are. You know? "
