Go with cut, live bait on Napa River; catch catfish at San Pablo Dam

More summertime news. Cut bait and live bait will still catch stripers from the bank.
Expect that they will be shakers — less than 18 inches. Trollers and casters can score some decent-sized keepers with Rattletraps, hair jigs and swimbaits. The action is up and down so don’t give up.
Look for a new infusion of bigger fish come September and October.
No sturgeon action to report.
• Napa Valley Fly Fishing Club
I’m fresh off of the August meeting of the Napa Valley Fly Fishing Club.
President Michael McKeown announced that our classy Web site had 2,993 visitors in July for 13,395 hits — an all-time record.
There was also a good hit on our brochure rack at Sweeney’s Sports.
I look for a big number at the September meeting as anglers get back from traditional vacations.
Hope they bring their best pix and stories with them.

• Conn Dam/Lake Hennessey
Low — and slow. Bass fishing has dropped with the water level. All of those great humps and shoreline structures are now above water.
Because it’s hard to find the deeper structure, the bass seem to have the upper hand right now.
No plants of trout during the hot weather. They will start again in the fall.
• San Pablo Dam Reservoir
The word here is “catfish.”
With regular plants, the lake is ready for you.
Best locations are the back of Scow Canyon, main rec area, tower or launch ramp.
Chicken liver, nightcrawlers, shrimp and stink bait have been working well.
The hot bass locations are now out of water and it’s just too warm for trout. So, rent a boat and go hunt those whisker fish.
• Lake Berryessa
The guys at the Spanish Flat Resort Marina (966-7708) passed on this latest information: Work the 70- to 80-foot depths in the narrows or near the dam for salmon and trout. Both Needlefish and Apex lures are working well.
Be patient with your catfish rig; get the bait to the bottom and let it move with the water movement.

Jigs, Senkos, spinner baits, Spooks, poppers, drop shots, shakey heads ... no, I’m not describing my tackle box. These are the lures you may need to get your largemouth bass fix right now.
The cold and variable weather has knocked them off of their regular summer pattern. Hopefully, a good stretch of warming temperatures will fix this problem.
• Baja
Last week we told you that the Loreto dorado bite was not up to usual standards.
Well, this week’s report tells of a much improved bite as the winds calmed down.
