Art notes: Scholarship awarded
Ethan Dittrich will be awarded a Music in the Vineyards scholarship during an upcoming concert Friday at the Jarvis Conservatory.
Young musicians who are entering college and majoring in music in the fall were eligible for the scholarships, which were based on auditions tapes. Ethan will be attending Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and majoring in cello.

Artesa Winery and Larson Family Vineyards present “Place/Settings,” recent works by St. Helena artist Nancy Willis, through Sept. 4 at Cornerstone Gardens 23570 Hwy 121, Sonoma. A reception for the artist is Aug.12, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Auditions for sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses for positions in the Napa Valley Chorale’s fall season are Monday, Aug. 20, by appointment. Auditions consist of vocalization, tonal memory and sight reading. It is not necessary to prepare solo material.
Artistic Director Jan Lanterman said music for the chorale’s fall season includes the major work “Gloria” by Canadian composer Andrew Gilpin, and works by John Rutter, Stephen Paulus, Stephen Chatman, Sergei Rachmaninoff and F. Melius Christiansen. Preparations culminate with the chorale’s holiday concerts, conducted by Lanterman and Mark Teeters, on Dec. 9, at First United Methodist Church in Napa. Those interested in auditioning should call 261-6165.
The 2007-08 theater season at Napa Valley College holds auctions for its two fall performances, “Our Town,” and “Bambi, a Life in the Woods,” Aug. 20 and 21. “Our Town” auditions are at 7 p.m, and “Bambi” auditions are at 4 p.m. Both auditions are in the college theater.
Actors ages 16 and older are encouraged to audition for both productions. Younger actors, ages 13-16, will be considered for roles in “Bambi, a Life in the Woods.” Those wishing to audition should come prepared to read from the script. Prepared monologues are not required.
“Our Town” is Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece about love and life in New Hampshire village in the early 20th century. The director, Sharon Winegar, is presently directing “Romeo and Juliet” for the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival.
“Bambi, A Life in the Woods,” based on the book by Felix Salten and adapted by James DeVita, will be directed by NVC artistic director Jennifer King.

Vallejo native Marques Vickers headlines an exhibition titled “Voyages” at the Maison Gibert gallery in Lezignan, France. The show, running through August also features French, German and Austrian artists. “Voyages” is Vicker’s second major French presentation since he relocated to the Southern Languedoc region in June 2005. He will be exhibiting 55 paintings and two stand-alone sculptures.
