The Napa Valley Register publishes monthly statistics on arrests and convictions for driving under the influence in Napa County. Statistics are published the first Monday of each month.

Arrest information is from the Napa County Sheriff’s Department. Convictions, names and blood-alcohol levels are from Napa County Superior Court.
Convictions include cases in which the person pleaded guilty or no contest to one or more drunk driving charges, or where one or more such charges resulted in a guilty verdict at trial.

Vehicle code violations considered are: driving under the influence (Vehicle Code section 23152), reckless driving while under the influence (23103.5) and causing injury to another while driving while under the influence (23153).
The blood-alcohol levels provided by the court are based on a variety of tests — some taken at the scene of the arrest or county jail, others through a later blood test — and have not necessarily been proven or admitted in court. It is unlawful for any person to operate a vehicle if that person has a blood-alcohol level of .08 or more, according to the California Vehicle Code.

 Arrests: 78
 Convictions/pleas: 84

Reported blood-alcohol below .10 or unavailable: 19

Reported blood-alcohol between .10 and .19: 48

Reported blood-alcohol between .20 and .29: 15

Reported blood-alcohol between .30 and .39: 2

Who commits al the crime? wrote on Aug 6, 2007 2:46 PM:

" So I did a little "ethnic" tabulation on the DUI names list. I always seem to read one sided reader responses where the writer claims that all the crime is committed by the "Mexicans" in Napa, and they go on to cite the monthly DUI list as evidence. So this month after seperating the "Spanish" sounding names from the "White" sounding names here is the score. Whites - 42, Spanish - 39, American-Africans - 1... looks pretty even to me right now. Maybe "whitey" can sober up some, thus "pushing" the "Mexicans" into first place next month? "

" You're awesome! You can determine ethnicity solely by name. Wow! "

To "who commits all the crime": wrote on Aug 6, 2007 3:58 PM:

" Okay Einstein, according to your own “ethnic tabulation”, Hispanics accounted for 48% of DUI‘s for July. However, Hispanics make up far less then 48% of the population (at least for now). So, no, they don’t commit all the crime in Napa but they do commit a disproportionate (more than their share) amount of crime to the population. "

" how you can tell someone is African American or Mexican by their name...I know plenty of white people that have a spanish sounding name...someone is in need of a civics class or two... "

Red Rider wrote on Aug 6, 2007 6:08 PM:

" This list is intended to give shame to those who commit such foolishness. but those who want to break up this list into ethniticity are just as ignorant. So I may remind you Napans, the list is high and those are only the ones that have been caught, what needs to be published is the age as well as how many DUI offenses this is for them. "

who commits all the crime... wrote on Aug 6, 2007 6:36 PM:

" The "ethnic" tabulation was a tongue in cheek commentary directed at those who consistently read the crime logs and post comments here stating that hispanics are the problem in Napa. You did note that I put Spanish and White sounding names in quotations right? And how many whites or hispanics do you know with the first name Cheronda? I am tired of reading all the usual racist responses bashing the Mexican population in Napa and pinning them as the lawbreakers. The hispanic community comprises a recorded 28% of Napa county as of September 2006, while advocates in the Latino community put that number at 40% or more. So recalculate your figures when you claim they commit a disproportionate (more than their share) of the crime. "

" Printing this information is a good start. Now, let's print the names of all the parents who don't pay child support. I think people would be shocked at who is on that list as well. "

" I agree, but lets also throw in the spousal abusers, and their records. I believe this is a huge issue that is kept so secret even by the abused who don't know who to turn to. Let's pull these MALE DOMINANT (Insert nasty word) into the light, they are so big in their own homes, or protected by their mommas cause their daddy did it too, lets see how long it lasts when their names are out in public. "

Anyone Notice a Trend? wrote on Aug 7, 2007 3:38 PM:

" Well, "who commits.." let's see. If the "official" portion of Napa's population is quoted at 28% but some latino leaders claim 40% while the DUI figures work out to be 48% (mol)..then YOU DO THE MATH......huh? What does it work out to be? AND, this is just the DUI list; when people state that the majority of crime is being committed by mexicans/hispanics/latinos, they are talking about ALL crime / all police log reports, not the DUI only. Yours is a specious argument. The SHAME is that NONE of these figures represent the truth; that this country, this county is being invaded while it is also being abused. "

racial profiling wrote on Aug 8, 2007 1:55 AM:

" A better question would be this, do Napa police officers engage in racial profiling... you would think that both ethnic groups are just as likely to drink and drive, why then would the smaller segment of the population account for nearly half of those arrested for dui? "

lets not get racist wrote on Aug 9, 2007 11:24 PM:

" i dont think its right for everyone to blame crime in napa on nonwhites its notlike whites dont drink and drive .... its not the color of there skin or there name you should look at but the actual person im mexican and i have never drank and drove at the sametime and i know many mexicans in napa that havent so please lets not get racist and have a fLASHback of the 70s i love whites and whites love me so please "

Napa girl wrote on Aug 10, 2007 11:07 AM:

" Why don’t we look at all crimes with in Napa and see what’s really going on if you want to compare the over all "ethnic" tabulation Now that would be a List to comment on. "

To Racial Profiling wrote on Aug 10, 2007 3:05 PM:

" If you think the police can tell the ethnicity of a driver while they are behind them....than you have quite a bit of faith in their observation skills. It would definitely be pretty amazing. Not to mention, a majority of DUI arrest occur at night when it is dark. Thus an even greater feat to determine whether someone is Hispanic, White or Black behind the wheel. Also, how about we start publishing the names of all of the parents arrested for child abuse/endangerment. You only hear the tragic stories of the children who die. What about the ones who are beaten and neglected. It seems to be a growing trend of children being mistreated all over the country. "

Timmy aka "The Fonz" wrote on Aug 10, 2007 8:08 PM:

" The families of these people who did this should be ashamed of their own son or daughter for doing this crime in the first place, the person or persons should be ashamed of themselves for putting their life in danger, if I was a driver in this town, I sure won't do drinking and driving, I would let my back up driver or call a family member just to drive me home instead of me taking a serious risk of doing something stupid, like driving and cause a serious injury to myself and people around me or people I know. "
