Local Report: Napa Cardinal routs Ukiah twice on road

From Register Staff

The visiting Napa Cardinal Junior American Legion baseball team improved to 29-10 for the summer season with two convincing wins, 8-2 in Game 1 and 12-6 in Game 2, against the Ukiah Cats on Saturday afternoon.

In Game 1, Steven Nagy tossed a complete game four-hitter and struck out eight batters to lead the way. Nagy had a no-hitter broken up in the fifth inning.

Bud Accardo (2-for-4, RBI), Jordan Burns (1-for-3, RBI), Brandon Savin (1-for-4, RBI) and Nagy (1-for-3, triple, two stolen bases) led the Napa offensive attack.

In Game 2, Napa scored in every inning except one, allowing the pitching combination of C.J. Blom, Anthony Bergman and Patrick Powers plenty of support for the win. Blom started and earned the win for his four innings of work.

Savin (2-for-3, triple, RBI, two stolen bases), Blom (2-for-3, double, four RBIs), Michael Crandell (1-for-3, three RBIs) and Powers (2-for-5, RBI, two stolen bases) were the top hitters for the Cardinal. As a team, Napa stole 11 bases in the game.

The District 5 Junior Legion playoffs begin on Tuesday.

Joe DiMaggio Baseball

• North Bay Regional playoffs

The Joe DiMaggio Baseball League’s North Bay Regionals continued Sunday with the Tri-County Gamblers shutting out the Mendocino Rattlers, 15-0, in a five-inning game at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville.

Michael Gleeson was the winning pitcher, giving up four hits and striking out five. Gleeson was also 2-for-2.

Brock Neil was 2-for-3 with a grand slam and four RBIs and Nathaniel Lucero was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

The win clinched a spot for Tri-County in the Joe DiMaggio World Series in Carson City, Nev. The Gamblers, by virtue of their 5-4 win over the Vallejo Spartans later in the day, will be the No. 1 seed at Western Nevada Community College. They will open at 10 a.m. Thursday against the No. 3 seed — the winner of today’s 5 p.m. game in Yountville between Mendocino and Middletown.

Vallejo gained the No. 2 seed by edging Mendocino 6-5 on Gerrad Filippi’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the eighth inning on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans will play San Francisco’s Trinity Maintenance at 12:45 p.m. Thursday in Carson City.

Youth Track and Field

• Napa Track Club heads to Junior Olympics

The Napa Track Club will have four athletes competing at the 41st USA Track & Field Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships. More than 6,000 of the country’s top young athletes are expected to attend this prestigious meet, which will be held starting Tuesday and continue through July 29 at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

Entry for this championship is based on athlete performances at preliminary, Association, and Regional meets. Only the top three athletes in each event at the regional level are eligible to advance to the Junior Olympic Championships.

The Napa Track Club competes in Region 14, which covers an area from Bakersfield to the Oregon border, and also includes parts of western Nevada. Its Regional Championship was held June 29-July 1 at Ratcliffe Stadium at Fresno City College.

Due to its large geographical area and the quality and quantity of its membership, the Region 14 meet is always highly competitive. But with this year’s Junior Olympic Championships taking place nearby in Southern California, competition for the coveted top three spots was even more intense.

Napa qualified 14 athletes to compete in Fresno. They took part in 24 events and attained six personal records. Four of their competitors brought home medals and earned invitations to the Junior Olympic Championships.

Susan Jackson earned meet championship honors in the young women’s high jump competition. This will be her final season with the track club, and the Junior Olympics will be her final meet before she begins her college career. This will be her fourth trip to compete in the high jump at the JOs.

Ashley Augustus earned her first Junior Olympics berth with a second-place finish in the midget girls division of the 1,500-meter racewalk. The Harvest Middle School student set a personal record with a time of 8:49.73.

Also earning a second-place finish and setting a personal best was Lauren Cardey. Her clearance of 4 feet, 93⁄4 inches earned the Justin-Siena incoming freshman a second consecutive trip to the Junior Olympics in the high jump.

Kevin Cardey, who will be a junior at Justin–Siena this fall, was the final athlete to qualify. His clearance of 5-10 was good for third place in the intermediate boys high jump competition. He also just missed qualifying in the long jump, finishing fourth and was one spot out of the medals.

The club’s midget girls 4x800 relay team was also one spot out of the medals and finished fourth. The runners were Mackenzie Mills, Claire Miller, Taylor Hollabaugh and Augustus. Mills added an eighth-place finish in the high jump, Miller had a sixth in the turbo javelin, and Hollabaugh had a sixth and a personal record (9:54) in the 1,500 racewalk.

Other athletes with good performances included Brendan Cardey (fourth in the turbo javelin and eighth in high jump), Erin Mills (fifth in the turbo javelin and eighth with a personal record the 1500 meters), Dominic Giovannoni (fifth in the high jump), Megan Zoller (sixth in the high jump), Mario Giovannoni (sixth in high jump), Eric Zoller (sixth with a PR in the 400 meters), and Jennifer Cardey (seventh in triple jump and eighth with a PR in long jump).

The Junior Olympics will be the final meet of the 2007 season for the track club.
