SAN MATEO — The San Mateo County coroner’s office has identified a man who was killed by police after he fled the scene of a suspected armed robbery.

Adam Ramirez, 43, of Hayward, was described by his nephew Maurice Garcia, 26, as a father of six and one-time mechanic who had recently received a disability settlement.
On Friday, police chased Ramirez in his sport utility vehicle into a county mental health center’s parking lot following reports that gunmen had held up a nearby grocery store.

Ramirez entered the center and shot Sean Moran, 35, in the side, police said, before exchanging gunfire with officers. Moran was taken to Stanford Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, said his mother, Marilyn Metcalfe.
Witnesses said Ramirez opened fire on police before he was slain.

“The dude popped two shots at the cops,” Johari Broussard, 36, a resident in the neighborhood, told the San Francisco Chronicle. “After that, the cops returned fire.”
Ramirez’s family said they don’t believe he fired first.

“It doesn’t add up,” Garcia told the Chronicle. “My uncle would try to run before he turned to fire at police.”
