Fire burns near Colorado homes
By the Associated Press
SILT, Colo. — A rapidly spreading wildfire likely started by lightning burned within about 10 yards of a home Saturday afternoon, but no structures were lost, officials said.
About 80 firefighters, more than 10 engines, a helicopter and single-engine air tanker fought the fire, estimated at about 40 acres, said Bureau of Land Management spokesman David Boyd.
Ten homes were near the fire, including two that were immediately threatened. The flames were burning away from the homes Saturday evening on a mix of private and BLM land, and the structures were no longer in immediate danger, Boyd said.
Still, the fire was not contained Saturday evening.
Further south in Mesa County, sheriff’s officials alerted 150 homes and businesses to a fire estimated at 200 acres, burning about 10 miles southeast of Grand Junction on Reeder Mesa, Boyd said. There were no evacuation orders as of Saturday evening but residents were told to be prepared.
Two single-engine air tankers were sent to that fire.
“Even though we’ve been getting rain in the mountains, the fire danger in western Colorado is still extreme,” Boyd said.
