Wine Country Film Festival kicks off
The Napa Sonoma Wine Country Film Festival starts Thursday and runs through Aug. 5 in various places in American Canyon, Napa and Sonoma.
It is in American Canyon July 19-22 at Cartlidge & Brown Winery and the Gaia Hotel, then in Napa, July 26-29 at Frazier Winery and Copia.

UCLA Cancer Center honors Nickel family
UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation honored the Nickel family’s efforts, along with the V Foundation for cancer research, to raise $1 million for UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at its gala June 16 in Hollywood.
The funds will be used to establish the V Foundation — Gil Nickel Fellowship for Melanoma Research to train a new generation of scientists to conduct melanoma research at UCLA and other institutions nationwide.
The fellowship was created in memory of Gil Nickel, proprietor of Napa Valley’s Far Niente winery, who died of melanoma in October 2003.
Special book auction at Napa Library
Friends of the Napa City-County Library, at 580 Coombs St., are holding a special silent book auction and sale this weekend in Napa.
Items for sale and auction include rare, old and special books, autographed copies and many multi-volume sets. Books to be auctioned will be on display and available for inspection and written bids throughout the sale, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Sunday from 2-7 p.m.

Film noir comes to St. Helena’s Cameo
Now here’s a college class that sounds interesting: “Film Genres: Film Noir, Humanities 189A” at Napa Valley College.
It will be taught by Ian McIver, and runs Aug. 21 through Dec. 19 each Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Cameo Cinema.

Staglin Music Festival for Mental Health
Staglin Family Vineyard will host its Music Festival for Mental Health, Sept. 8.
A reception and wine tasting will be in the caves from 2-2:30 p.m. and from 3:45-5 p.m. There will be a performance by Gladys Knight.
Tickets to the reception and concert are $500; tickets for the reception, concert and exclusive dinner are $3,500.
