Local Report: Napa Track Club athletes win eight of their 10 events at All-Comers
From Register Staff
Less than a week after returning from the National Finals in Chicago, Napa Track Club athletes competed in a Pacific Association of USA Track & Field Youth All-Comers Track & Field Meet at Vallejo High School on Saturday.
Six of the club’s athletes competed well in 10 events, notching eight first-place finishes and two seconds.
Three of the club’s high jumpers set personal records. Brendan Cardey won both the high jump and the turbo javelin events in the 11-12 boys age division. He improved his PR in the high jump by 3 feet with a clearance of 4 feet, 4 inches, and later tossed the javelin 106 feet to triumph. The St. John’s Lutheran sixth-grader is ranked 35th in the nation in the turbo throw.
In the 13-14 girls division, St. John’s eighth-grader Olivia Husted set a new PR in the high jump with a winning height of 4-11, moving her into the top 50 nationally with another year to compete in that age group. She also won the 800 meters.
Napa High School senior-to-be Dominic Giovannoni captured the high jump and triple jump in the 17-18 age division. Giovannoni’s triple jumps have been in the 41- to 42-foot range all summer, as he looks to improve on this year’s Monticello Empire League runner-up finish.
Mario Giovannoni, an incoming Napa High sophomore, claimed the triple jump in the 15-16 boys division and took second in the high jump. After winning the MEL junior varsity high jump title this past season, he hopes to move up to the varsity next spring.
Justin-Siena junior Kevin Cardey won the high jump in the 15-16 boys group with a PR of 6-2, which vaulted him up to 12th place in the national youth rankings. He hopes to be in contention for a medal at the Junior Olympics later this month.
Lauren Cardey, 14, qualified for her second straight Junior Olympics in the high jump. The Justin-Siena freshman-to-be matched her PR with a second-place height of 4-10.
The club’s final tune-up for the Junior Olympics will be an All-Comers meet Saturday in Union City.

• Napa Cardinal 15,
Tompson Cabinetry-Fairfield 14
After relying on sttrong starting pitching and consistent defense to win games this summer, Napa Cardinal needed its bats and excellent relief pitching to win at Fairfield’s Laurel Creek Park Wednesday night.
Napa scored nine runs in the first inning to take a commanding lead, but allowed TC right back in the game by giving up four runs during the home half of the inning. The third and fourth innings proved to be difficult innings for the Cardinal as well, as TC tacked on eight more runs to take a 12-9 lead.
Napa regained the lead with five runs in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a two-RBI double from Andrew Pieper (6-for-7, two doubles, stolen base), a two-RBI triple from CJ Blom (3-for-6, triple) and a run-scoring single from Anthony Bergman (1-for-2). The game remained 14-12 in Napa’s favor until the bottom of the sixth, when TC managed two runs to tie it at 14.
Both teams failed to execute any offensive production until, after four hours and 45 minutes, the Cardinal (23-8 overall) plated the winning run during the visiting half of the 12th and final inning.
Patrick Powers earned the win in relief with five scoreless innings of four-hit pitching, striking out seven. Along with Pieper, Blom and Bergman, the Cardinal offensive attack was led by Bud Accardo (2-for-6, RBI, stolen base) and Mike Jones (2-for-5, triple, RBI).
