Local Report: Napa Track Club advances 14 athletes to regionals
A contingent of 16 young athletes traveled from Napa to Livermore this past weekend to compete in the Pacific Association/USA Track & Field Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.
The three-day event served as the initial qualifying round for the USATF Junior Olympic Nationals, which will be held in Orange, Calif., July 24-29.
Due to the proximity of the National Finals in Southern California, the meet drew a record number of entrants. The Pacific Association is the largest member association of USA Track & Field, and over 60 PA/USATF track clubs from all over Northern California and northwest Nevada were in attendance.
More than 1,500 athletes, ages 8-18, took part in the age-group competition.
The top eight finishers in each track and field event earned the right to advance to the USATF Region 14 Junior Olympic Championships, which will be held June 29-July 1 in Fresno.
Fourteen of Napa’s athletes qualified to move on to the next round of competition in 23 separate events. They earned a total of eight medals and set eight new personal records.
Susan Jackson earned Napa’s lone gold medal, winning the Young Women’s division of the high jump. Jackson, who is bound for Sacramento State on a track scholarship this fall, was also honored in a special ceremony on the infield. This will be her final season competing in the USATF Junior Program.
She has been a member of the Napa Track Club since 1999, and she holds four Pacific Association records.
Kevin Cardey, a junior at Justin-Siena High School, also had an outstanding meet. He collected medals and qualified to move on to Fresno in all three of his events, setting two new personal records along the way. His high jump of 6 feet, 11⁄2 inches earned him a silver medal, his clocking of 52.66 seconds in the 400 meters earned him a bronze, and he also took home a bronze in the long jump.
Ashley Augustus also will be busy with three events in Fresno. The Harvest Middle School seventh-grader earned a silver medal with a new PR in the 1500-meter race-walk (8:57.45), and also qualified in the turbo javelin and as a member of Napa’s 4x800 meter relay team.
Several Napa athletes earned the right to advance to the Region 14 Championships in two events. Claire Miller earned a bronze medal in the turbo javelin and was also a member of the 4x800 relay team. Mackenzie Mills moved on to the next round in the high jump and the relay, while Taylor Hollabaugh rounded out the relay team and also advanced with a new PR in the 1500-meter race-walk.
Jennifer Cardey will be competing in two individual events in Fresno, as she advanced in both the long jump and the triple jump. The incoming freshman at Justin-Siena had her best triple jump of the year, setting a mark of 31-6.
The youngest Cardey, 12-year-old Brendan, also qualified to move on in two events. His marks in the Midget Boys division of the high jump and the turbo javelin were both good enough to advance him to the Regional Championships.
The group’s youngest athlete, 8-year-old Erin Mills, advanced to the next round in two events as well. She will compete in Fresno in the 1500 meters and in the turbo javelin.
The Club had a total of eight athletes qualify to move on to the next round of competition in the high jump. Lauren Cardey (silver medal), Megan Zoller (bronze medal), Mario Giovannoni (fourth) and Dominic Giovannoni (fifth) all earned the right to compete in Fresno. Mario Giovannoni also added a new personal record in the 400-meter hurdles.
The final member of the group to advance to the regional finals was Eric Zoller. The ninth-grader ran an excellent race in the 400 meters, finishing fourth and setting a new personal best time (56.17).
Immediately following the Region 14 Championships in Fresno, 16 members of the Club will be departing for Chicago and the Youth National Track & Field Championships.
