Sports capsule: Napa High School cross country team plans summer activities
Napa High School’s cross country program has many activities and conditioning scheduled this summer.
The team welcomes all who are interested in participating in cross country this fall, including any incoming freshman. The program will have three scheduled runs each week throughout the summer and will have a five-day training camp scheduled in Mammoth Lakes, from July 22-26.

J.J. Jakovac’s Golf Bash tees off Friday at Vintner’s Golf Club
J.J. Jakovac’s Golf Bash is Friday at Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville. It has a 1 p.m. shotgun and is a scramble format. The $150 per person entry fee includes greens fees, cart, range balls, food and drink on the course, dinner and prizes. There will be a long drive exhibition at 12:30 p.m. by John Lawson Jr., a two-time RE/MAX World Long Drive contestant.
Proceeds benefit the career of Jakovac, a Napa native and local playing professional, who was not able to play on the U.S. Pro Golf Tour, as Greens Worldwide Inc., said the schedules for the U.S. Pro Golf Tour will remain suspended and will not resume until financing is secured. Jakovac had planned to play in U.S. Pro Golf Tour events.
Jakovac played at Vintage High School and was a Ping First-Team All-American for Chico State’s golf team in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He was the 2002 and 2004 NCAA Division II national individual champion and the 2002 and 2004 California Collegiate Athletic Association Athlete of the Year. He was a two-time Arnold Palmer Award winner and the 2004 Jack Nicklaus Award winner. He finished 11th on the official money list for the A.G. Spanos Tour last year.

Napa hosts North Bay BMX State Championship race on Saturday
Napa will host the North Bay BMX State Championship race on Saturday. Sign-ups are from 10-11:30 a.m. and racing starts at noon. It’s a double points event and plaques will be awarded for first through third-place finishers. The cost is $20 for ABA members. Golf for Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types set July 9
The second annual Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types Golf Tournament and dinner is July 9 at Napa Valley Country Club. Registration is at 10:30 a.m., there’s a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m., and a dinner/silent auction is at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $150 per player, or $50 for dinner only tickets. Ichthyosis is a group of rare genetic skin diseases that affect more than 16,000 babies each year, and is characterized by very dry, cracked, scaling and thickened skin. In addition to the medical implications, Ichthyosis is a very visible disease, and affected individuals must also handle the psychological factors attributed to their appearance.
Revenue generated will help FIRST in its commitment to find better treatments, increase research and support programs for affected individuals and families./Register

Solano CC offers shooting day basketball clinic July 14
Solano Community College is offering a shooting day clinic for basketball players, boys and girls ages 7 to 17. The clinic is July 14 and runs from 9 a.m. to noon. It’s three hours concentrated on the fundamentals of shooting. Players will leave the clinic with a better understanding of shooting techniques and drills that they can practice at home. The cost is $40 per player, $30 for additional siblings, and $30 per player for team sign-ups (eight or more). Registration is available at the door.

Tackle football camp comes to Justin-Siena High July 16-21
The 2007 NFL-Junior Player Development Camp, a tackle football camp presented by Justin-Siena High School, is July 16-21, at Justin-Siena (4026 Maher St., Napa). It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 11 a. m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The camp is for players ages 12 to 14.
The camp is free, but you must register to attend due to limited space.
All equipment is provided by the NFL. Fundamentals will be taught by an experienced coaching staff. Athletes will learn the game and life skill lessons in a positive environment.

Braves Water Polo Camp starts July 30 at Napa Valley College
Boys and girls in grades 8-12 are eligible to sign up for the Braves Water Polo Camp, which runs from July 30-Aug. 3 and Aug. 6-10, at Napa Valley College. It runs from 9-11 a.m. each day. This camp, hosted by Justin-Siena coach Laurie Gaynor, will feature a number of talented instructors to provide insight on making the strides as a water polo player. The cost is $70 per camper.
