Garrett Jarecki nailed a 2-0 pitch to right field to plate Tyler Hansel from second base in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Angels a 10-9 win over the White Sox in Wednesday evening’s Babe Ruth City Championship.

The Angels took their undefeated playoff record of 3-0 into Wednesday’s game and survived a close one to top out at 20-3-1 overall on the season.
“In the end, they came through,” Angels manager Randy Lung said. “Through the whole season, they always played to their opponents’ level. They played well enough to win.”

The White Sox — who were 3-1 heading into the Championship, having lost 12-10 to the Angels on Monday — dropped to 18-4-3 overall on the season.
“It was a good season,” White Sox manager Mike Maguire said. “(We) were a strong team defensively all year long. We struggled a bit today; defense wins championships and today the Angels did well.”

The White Sox jumped ahead 9-8 after 51⁄2 innings but after a balk in the home half of the sixth, the Angels tied the game at 9. Angels relief hurler Stephen Bates pitched into three straight groundouts in the top of the seventh to give his team the chance to win it without heading into extra frames.
Hansel drew a walk on four straight pitches then immediately reached second base on a passed ball. Two pitches later Bates flied out, but right fielder Jarecki strutted to the plate for the walk-off single off White Sox relief pitcher Bobby Ojala.

“They played well,” Lung said, adding that a championship with his 15-year-old son Kevin Lung made it that much sweeter. “We had a lot of talent this year. They’re by far the most talented team I’ve coached. We’ve had our ups and downs; it was nice to end on a big up.

“They’ve been lights out in the playoffs and that makes all the difference in the world.”

Hansel (double, single, three runs, two RBIs), Bates (two singles, run, stolen base) and Jake Hall (two singles, RBI, two stolen bases) led the Angels’ offense while Joe Martinez (single, two runs), Kevin Lung (single, two runs, RBI, two stolen bases), John Frye (RBI) and Tyler Beierle (single, stolen base, run) all chipped in at the plate.

Ojala led all hitters with three singles while also scoring two runs for the White Sox. Blake Zuniga (two singles, two runs, two RBIs) and Mario Gagetta (two singles, run, RBI) notched two hits apiece while Jonathan Woodward (single, two runs), Zack Zuniga (single, two RBIs), Josh Tremblay (single, run, two RBIs), Nick Roberts (single, RBI), Dan Maguire (single), Trevor Swanson (RBI, run) and Max Kampton (sacrifice) produced as well.

“Overall we didn’t have too many 15-year-olds,” Maguire said. “It’s a credit to the team to stick in it. We did have a great group of kids and coaches.”

The Angels jumped ahead 3-1 after one full inning, but the White Sox powered through the third inning and scored five runs to take the lead at 6-3. They kept that advantage until the fifth inning, when the Angels put up four runs on an error and four hits, to put the scoreboard at 8-7.

Zack Zuniga’s single in the sixth inning plated Gayetta and Ojala, which put the Angels back on top at 9-8.

“The two Zunigas have the biggest hearts,” Maguire said of Zack and Blake. “They’ve improved so much. (Losing is) better than getting knocked out early. We were better than last year. The team really came along.”
