If your taste in music runs to the country greats — Hank Williams, Bob Wills, Merle Haggard — then scoot your boots over to the Napa Bowl Lounge on Saturday for an evening with the Mean Time Playboys. You’ll enjoy a generous serving of Western-style country music, with plenty of great picking and singing from an all-Napa group.

Led by steel-guitar virtuoso Sean Allen, a well-known local performer (Mystics, Michael Thomason Band) and teacher (Napa School of Music), the band also includes guitarist Mark Seelye of the popular group Passin’ Through; bassist Don Schmitt (Michael Thomason Band), accordionist Steve Steiner and drummer Rob Crane — all Napa natives — with guitarist John Ruch and singer Julianne Poirier Locke.
The Mean Time Playboys specialize in America’s greatest country and western tunes, from Johnny Cash to the Flatlanders, delivered with a driving beat and plenty of tasty guitar licks. The band rehearses weekly year-round but, because of its members’ busy schedules, rarely plays in public — making Saturday’s gig a don’t-miss affair.

But if you do miss it, there’s one more chance this summer to enjoy Napa’s best-kept musical secret: The Mean Time Playboys appear July 21 for an all-ages dinner show at Locos on Main Street. For maximum enjoyment of the band’s extensive repertoire, plan to be at both gigs.
