Copia presents a season under the summer stars

Get ready for music under the summer stars as Copia kicks off its outdoor River Concert season on June 21.

With perennial favorites Pride & Joy kicking off the seven concert series, this summer’s headliners include the revival of the ’60s rock band Iron Butterfly, the first appearance in several decades of Greg Kihn, blues favorite Tommy Castro, and the samba sound and dances of Vivendo de Pão. More Motown sounds and an Elvis impersonator round out the program.
The concerts take place in Copia’s amphitheater on the Napa River.

Ticket window opens at 5 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m. (approximately one hour before show time). Lawn seating is first-come, first-served. Only low-back beach chairs or small blankets are permitted on the concert lawn. A limited number of chairs are available at the top of the amphitheater bowl on a first-come, first-served basis.
Copia’s Terrace Grill offers grilled burgers and sausages, salads, sandwiches and other alfresco choices, along with wines and beers, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Outside food and beverages are not permitted; neither are pets (except service animals), large purses, backpacks or strollers. The River Concert Terrace area is a non-smoking venue.

Tickets for all concerts are $25 and can be be purchased by phone at 259-1600, online at www.copia.org, or in person at Copia’s admissions desk, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, except Tuesdays.
Pride & Joy

Thursday, June 21, 7:30 p.m.

You know it’s summer because Pride & Joy is back. A Napa Valley tradition as opening act for the summer alfresco concert series, Pride & Joy has remained the most popular party band on the Bay Area music scene. Founded 25 years ago by bandleader Coleman Burke, the popular band with the Motown sound has achieved this by presenting the most timeless pop and soul music of our time in an electrifying show. 

Iron Butterfly

Thursday, June 28, 7:30 p.m.

The iconic psychedelic band Iron Butterfly has toured extensively in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The driving force of bass player Lee Dorman and drummer Ron Bushy —  writer and legendary drum soloist for their monumental hit “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” — set the standard for generations of rock drummers. They’ve appeared with Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Chicago, Janis Joplin, Steppenwolf, Creedence Clearwater, Rush, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and the Byrds. The band also features Charlie Marinkovich (lead guitar and vocals) and Martin Gershwitz (keyboards/violin/vocals).

Pure Ecstasy: The Classics in Perfect Harmony

Thursday, July 12, 7:30 p.m.

Pure Ecstasy performs favorite Motown, rhythm and blues, jazz and soul songs with rich vocal harmonies and mesmerizing energy. Founded in 1991, they’ve performed nationally and internationally, always compelling their audience to join the party as they sing and dance throughout the crowd.

Vivendo de Pão: Brazilian Carnaval  Music & Dance Extravaganza

Thursday, July 26, 7:30 p.m.

It’s party time when San Francisco’s rhythmic samba powerhouse band takes the stage with a troupe of fantastically costumed samba dancers. Thrill to the sounds, colors and rhythms of Brazil in an evening that guarantees to have you dancing all the way home!

Tommy Castro Band

Thursday, Aug. 9, 7:30 p.m.

When Tommy Castro burst onto the scene in 1993 with “No Foolin’,” he captivated audiences worldwide. Now he’s gone beyond the blues by incorporating soul-blues into his repertoire. He just won BluesWax Blues Artist of the Year 2006 with a record number of first place reader votes.

Michael Bartle & Blue Suede

Thursday, Aug. 16, 7:30 p.m.

On Aug. 16, 1977, Elvis passed to the great beyond. “It’s Now or Never” to get “All Shook Up” and rock out to the songs of the King performed by Michael Bartle (aka the Great Pretender) and his band, Blue Suede. Their music covers Elvis’ career from country, gospel, pop and rockabilly to good old rock ’n’ roll.

Greg Kihn Band

Thursday, Aug. 23, 7:30 p.m.

This band has been a Bay Area and rock ‘n roll institution since the mid ’70s, and features Kihn’s son Ry Kihn (lead guitar), Dave Danza (Eddie Money’s former drummer), Tim Gorman (keyboards) and Dennis Murphy (bass). Kihn is a top-rated morning show host on Classic Rock KUFX (SF/SJ), whose show “Big Rock Beat” went into national syndication this year.
