The Napa Valley Youth Chorus Performing Choir presents its Spring Concert on Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 1917 Third St. They’ll perform a variety of musical selections from classical to contemporary; featured is a medley from “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” There is no charge; donations will be accepted and support the Napa Valley Youth Chorus. For more information, call Sharon Olson, director, at 252-2544.

The Performing Choir is open by audition to all students in grades five through 12. They make several appearances throughout the valley during the year, singing for holiday programs, private parties, public events and schools. In March they competed in the Napa Valley Choral Classic competition and came away with an Excellent rating. Each spring they end their season with a concert, which includes a variety of musical styles.
Music instruction is also available for the younger singer in the Prep Choir for second to fourth graders. This choir, taught by Marie Butler, was formed to open doors to the younger child who wants to learn about choir, with an emphasis on music basics.

As of the first of this year, the Napa Valley Youth Chorus has a new sponsor. It is now a part of the Napa Valley Choral Society, which was founded in 1963. The Choral Society thrives in its continuing quest to provide lifelong opportunities for participation in choral singing through the study and performance of choral repertoire. Led by Artistic Director Jan Lanterman, the Napa Valley Choral Society comprises the Napa Valley Chorale for adults and older youth (Jan Lanterman & Mark Teeters, conductors) and the Napa Valley Youth Chorus for children in second grade through high school.
Japanese pianist Hiroko Miyagi performs classical music Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in Napa. Tickets are $15 at the door. She’ll give a second performance Sunday at 3 p.m. in Paulin Hall on the PUC campus in Angwin.

Miyagi was a student at the Paris Conservatory and has recorded with the Warsaw Chamber Orchestra.
Friday’s concert consists of piano solos and chamber works. Sunday she performs the world premiere of the Concertino For Piano and Strings by local composer Robert Wright. Wright, a Bay Area native, is a member of the Napa Valley Symphony Orchestra. He composed the concertino for Miyagi. The performance includes a combined orchestra of college students and professional musicians, conducted by Rachelle Davis. The PUC performance is presented free of charge.
