Not impressed by circle logic

Dear editor, It seems almost daily there is news that our local cities are considering the installation of traffic circles at intersections.

May 15, it was a story about American Canyon (“Roundabouts and 6 lanes for 29 in AmCan?”); the day before, it was the Bel Aire Plaza (“Popular north Napa shopping center squaring off with traffic, parking woes,” May 14).
As a resident of the east side of Napa, I would like to invite you to visit the scene of the traffic circle at the intersection of East Avenue and Highland. The picture pretty much tells the story of the success of the roundabout: Reflectors on the patched up curb because, at night, cars used to drive straight over the circle. Lots of signs with diagrams (eight in total) instructing drivers how to maneuver this unusual intersection. Orange flags warning drivers of a hazardous situation. And finally, the recent addition of potted trees on top of the circle.

The circle was installed several months ago, I believe in an effort to slow down the speed of traffic along East Avenue.
If you were to spend some time observing the traffic, you would conclude that most drivers don’t slow down at all.

If you were to ask the residents of this neighborhood about the traffic circle, I’m sure you would be told it is ineffective, hazardous and an eyesore.
It’s hard to imagine that a roundabout on the busy American Canyon roads, with multiple lanes of traffic in each direction, would be a safe solution.

It’s even harder to imagine that a traffic circle would be an effective solution to the congestion in the Bel Aire Plaza.

" Roundabouts only work if everyone knows how they work and ALWAYS observes the rules or entering and exiting. They may work in the UK where everyone has grown up using them but I can't tell you how many accidents I observed when a tourist or other person unfamiliar with their operation tried to plow through one. Please keep these deathtraps away from us! "

" I agree with Olga. I recently drove East Ave., and couldn't figure out what the purpose of the roundabout was. It didn't slow down cars and is definitley an eyesore. What a stupid idea. Speed bumps would probably work better. There's a new style of bump I drove over in Concord that is very effective. It is higher, wider and flat on the top and works really well. "

" I think traffic circles are terrible, and in fact, in the last election, the inclusion of traffic circles was another reason I voted against the road tax increase. "

" The claim that the traffic circle dosn't work is patently false. It does work. The selfish nature of drivers in their tank-like overpowered vehices being minorly inconvenienced by having to slow down is just too much for some people. And by the way, the signs are their to educate you how to drive at this intersection. Is that too difficult? "

" Napa roads are some of the most poorly designed in the state (not to mention their horrible condition). Just look at the improvements (chuckle) on Trancas where what I call “the archipelago of RICOCHET ISLANDS” has so much evidence of cars bouncing off them (great for the front end shops). As well, chaos reigns as access was further restricted to shopping at Silverado plaza (as is the case all over Napa). The driving lanes wander so dangerously that drivers don’t stay in their lanes. Now, one of the most traveled streets is the alley behind the Plaza. Traffic lights have little to do with traffic demands and one can sit at Big Ranch waiting forever for the non-existent cross-traffic. What’s wrong with timing the lights on Trancas and other major arteries? Even after all the construction, there still is no turn lane onto Big Ranch Road. These traffic engineers seem to have all gone to the same failed seminars. "

" I think the ridiculous roundabout on East has only served to slow down the speeding city buses. I fail to see how the ugly potted trees will help anything. What a dumb idea. Can you say...stop sign? Would that not have worked? "

" If we continue to litter because we don't know how to stop . . . If we continue to eat transfat because we don't know how else to eat . . . If we continue continue to speed because we want to . . . If we continue to forge straigt ahead because it is all we know . . . Pleaaaaase! How about we progress into the future of something better instead of hanging on to what we know and no longer works. Give'em a ticket if they don't know how to drive the round-a-bout! "

" instead of putting a "circle" on East Ave...they should have considered repaving it. One of the worst streets in a town full of horrible pothole filled streets! "

" I live in the area of East Ave. It's really not hard to figure out how to navigate a roundabout. When there is something in your path you go around it right? It's not rocket science. Does it slow people down? No. I agree with Maybe, the city should have repaved East Ave first. Check it out sometime- it just may be the worst potholed patched and re-patched road in Calif. "

" I'm new to this state. I haven't seen the roundabout on East. Roundabouts are common in other areas of the country. I think they are great and easy to learn. Although those who are not familiar with them will upset the traffic behind them. You'll get used to them and learn to appreciate them. "

" I'm shocked to find out that roundabouts aren't there for teenagers to do 20 mph circles around in daddy's car! It's there to slow people down?! ok, ok, I live near east ave and take it daily. I will admit when they first put it in I almost plowed into it one evening. The ONE orange cone they had for "warning" had been removed. I really like the reflectors now. And, I'm glad they haven't repaved east ave since I can only imagine how people will fly thru there once the pavement isn't like a road on the moon. "

" I live here and drive East Ave. every day. I've driven roundabouts all over Europe. None, none were as poorly designed as this one! What'll it take? Somebody ending up in one of the corner houses at this intersection before the city realizes what a dumb idea this was? Easy answer: stop sign. Hellooooo..... "
