Stanford, Cal reach NCAA tennis semis
From The Associated Press
ATHENS, Ga. — The NCAA women’s tennis championships resembles a Pac-10 tournament.
Three teams from the conference advanced to the semifinals Sunday, with top-seeded Stanford beating Miami 4-1, 12th-seeded UCLA upsetting No. 4 Florida 4-3, and No. 10 California stunning second-seeded Georgia 4-1.
Third-seeded Georgia Tech also advanced to today’s semifinals. The Yellow Jackets reached the semifinals with a 4-2 victory over Notre Dame.
The Cardinal will take on UCLA, and California will face the Yellow Jackets.
“This wasn’t an easy match,” said Stanford’s Whitney Deason, who scored the deciding point in No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Romy Farah.
“I am speechless,” California coach Jan Brogan said after her team upset Georgia. “Heart and spirit is what won this one for us tonight. This is probably the highest seeded team that we’ve beaten to get to the semifinals.”
