Jean-Pierre de Rothschild introduces a new collection of oil paintings at the MJ Schaer Gallery May 19 with an artist’s reception, 1-4 p.m. The show continues through June 30.
The self-taught artist who developed his craft by studying the European masters, de Rothschild paints in a vibrant, impressionistic style. His inspiration for the upcoming show comes from the gardens of Giverny, France.
De Rothschild explained, “Most schoolboys in France have at one point or another gone on a school trip to Les Jardins de Giverny where Monet’s most powerful paintings were done. It is also where he painted the Japanese bridge over his pond — 28 times — in different light. Monet was the first to really paint the same scene over and over in different light and moods. Hence the idea arose for the series, such as his water lilies or his haystacks series. Much of the lavenders, blues and reds expressed in these paints were interpretations of the earlier times he spent in the south of France where such colors are present everywhere.
“For me, the heavier use of the palette knife technique is something I developed from admiring Van Gogh, although he used heavy brushes solely. Later, as my paintings became more serious, I developed a desire for a more lush use of colors, which only a palette knife application can provide,” de Rothschild said.
The MJ Schaer Gallery, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Sundays when it is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. The gallery is in the Historic Napa Mill, 500 Main St., Napa. Info, 251-3726 or www.mjschaergallery.com
