May at Copia: It's all relative and close to home

Copia is spending the merry month of May exploring Sonoma County, with food programs, including the popular Taste of Copia lunch and brunch designed on Sonoma themes, as well as a Walk-Around Wine Tasting Saturday.

Two Community Spotlight concerts are also on the May schedule. The outdoor concerts begin June 21.
Complementary tastings of a Sonoma County wine are served 7:15-8 p.m. before each Friday Night Flick. The movie line-up is:

Friday, May 11
‘Mrs. Palfrey at

the Claremont’
Oscar-nominated actress Joan Plowright is Mrs. Palfrey in this comedy about an elderly Scottish widow who moves to London and finds the big city less than welcoming until a young man helps her after a fall. 108 minutes. Not rated.

‘Shadow of a Doubt’

Young Charlie Newton decides her family’s quiet life in Santa Rosa needs livening up, and so she decides to invite her Uncle Charlie (after whom she is named) to stay. She discovers, however, he is already on his way to visit, pursued by detectives who suspect him of being “The Merry Widow Murderer,” an evil strangler wanted in connection with the deaths of several rich East Coast widows. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Michael S. Lasky, author of “The Complete Films of Alfred Hitchcock” introduces the film. 108 minutes. Not rated. 1943.

Just finishing a commercial, Jack (Michael Goorjian) is dying for sleep; his girl is dumping him, and his cousin from Beirut has just shown up at his door. Over the next 36 hours Jack’s life changes forever as he navigates through a tapestry of colorful characters and immigrant life revealing long-held family secrets. Directed by Kraig Kuzirian. Community Spotlight Concert: Gail Mead

Thursday, May 17, 8 p.m.

Backed by a four-member band, Mead searches for songs that speak to her heart and makes them her own whether belting the blues, crooning of love and loss or expressing her passionate concern about our troubled times. With her angelic but powerful voice, Mead has been compared to Linda Ronstadt and Natalie Merchant. Tickets: $18, $20. Pre-concert wine tasting courtesy of Humanitas Wine, 7:15-8 p.m.

Bella Ciao

Saturday, May 26, 8 p.m.

Fronted by a vocalist reminiscent of the Italian pop divas of the ’60s San Francisco’s famed six-piece band plays and sings everyone’s Italian favorites from the late ’50s (“Tu Vo Fa L’Americano”) to today’s hottest Italian-American hits including “The Pasta Song,” “Blue Italian Skies” and “Monica from Monaco” in a show that has everyone living la dolce vita. Tickets: $22.50, $25.

Community Spotlight Concert: The Maikai Gents

Thursday, May 31, 8 p.m.

The Maikai Gents, featuring the Mysterious Miss Mauna Loa, call you back to the islands with the classic sound of Hawaiian music. Combining vintage songs played with traditional instruments, such as ukulele and steel guitar, with captivating hula dancing, the Gents romantic crooning recreates an enchanted evening on a secluded beach sheltered by a palm trees under a bright moon. Pre-concert wine tasting courtesy of Judd’s Hill Winery, 7:15-8 p.m. Tickets: $18, $20.
