Locally she’s known as the daughter of Margie and Harry Cadelago, but that may not be for long. Angela Cadelago, the guest performer at an upcoming an benefit concert at the Carmelite Monastery in Oakville, is also an up and coming opera star.

Margie Cadelago has organized the May 6 concert “Afternoon of Serenity and Prayer,” to help the Carmelite mission in Kyengeza, Uganda. This is the third time she has gathered musicians for this concert in the majestic, historic monastery.
“A New Tapestry” — Margie Cadelago, a soprano; Lyn Walkenhorst,  soprano, piano, organ and flute; and Jack Kersting, tenor — will perform solo and ensemble works from sacred, operatic and musical theater repertoire. In addition, Margie  said, her brother  John Phillips, a clarinetist with the Napa Valley Symphony,  and his clarinetist wife Patty will be joined by their friend Michael Stern on bassoon to perform chamber works and accompany the singers.

But the star of this concert, Margie said, is her daughter Angela. Clearly benefiting from growing up with two of the valley’s most popular musicians (dad Harry is the beloved, longtime director of the Napa High School instrumental music program including marching band and orchestra). A Vintage High School graduate,  Angela made her professional debut as Adele in “Die Fledermaus” with San Francisco Lyric Opera in 1999, and has since performed such leading roles as Rosina in “The Barber of Seville,” and Mimì in “La Bohéme.” Following performances with the Mill Valley Philharmonic in June, she will be joining the summer 2007 season of the Carmel Bach Festival as a Virginia Best Adams Fellow. In 2009, she will appear as Papagena in Opera Santa Barbara’s production of “Die Zauberflöte.”
Angela has appeared in recital both in Italy and Denmark (where she was a featured student of Ileana Cotrubas). In the U.S., she has appeared as a soloist with the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra, the Oratorio Society of Queens and the Palo Alto Philharmonic in works such as Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, Handel’s Messiah, J.S. Bach’s Gottes Zeit ist die Allerbeste Zeit (BWV 106), and both Mozart’s Regina Coeli and Mass in C (“Coronation Mass”).

Angela earned her music degree from San Francisco State University. Her competition credits include finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Regional Auditions, and an Artist Fellowship with the Delaware Division of the Arts. She sings as a member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus, and lives in the East Bay with her husband, Chad, director of choral music at Albany High School.
The Kyengeza mission in Uganda was founded by a former prior at the Carmelite Monastery, Father David Costello, who is still in Kyengeza.  “There are still a huge number of needy orphans so that’s why we’re doing another concert,” Margie said.

Tickets, for a suggested donation of $35, will be sold at the door; for advance sales call Helga at the monastery, 944-1520.
