A tale of three cats

This may be the Year of the Boar, but in this valley it feels like the year of the cat. Or at least, the month of the cat.

Justin-Siena opens its production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Cats” Friday. The student production, which runs two weekends, is only the beginning.
For those who really love the show, they’ll be able to see it again in May when the 25th anniversary Broadway touring show comes to the Lincoln Theater for three performances May 18 at 8 p.m. and May 19 at 2 and 8 p.m. Tickets are $40-$125.

Deb Stallings, marketing director at Lincoln Theater, said the production is part of a year-long 50th anniversary celebration for the theater and will include “special” events like free face-painting by members of the cast for ticket holders 14 and younger on opening night; those over 21 will not have to regret being too old to have their faces painted because Domaine Chandon will be pouring a glass of complimentary sparkling wine for them that same night.
Tickets are selling out quickly for this first-ever appearance by a Broadway touring company in the Napa Valley. Reservations and information are available by calling the Lincoln Theater box office at 944-1300 or visiting www.lincolntheater.com

And if that’s not enough, that same weekend the Napa Valley Opera House will present the return of the amazing Moscow Cat Theatre, described by Family Magazine as “purrr-fect family fun.”
This international hit from Russia is apparently the only theater troupe that aspires to train actual cats, as compared to humans painted to look like cats. These mostly compliant felines provide “non-stop action … original and astounding acrobatic feats” — as long as the cats are in the mood to perform.

Two dogs and six human clowns are also permitted to be on the stage during the cat show.

The Cat Theatre sold out in its first appearance at the Opera House. This time they’ll stage four shows, May 17 and 18 at 7:30 and May 19 at noon, 3 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children, and may be reserved now by calling the Opera House box office at 226-7372.

" The Opera House has never had the Cat Theatre there before, it could not have sold out. "
