Napa High wrestler named All-America

NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:
Napa High School junior Alyx McChesney earned All-America honors after going 4-2 and placing eighth in the 134-pound division at the U.S. Girls Wrestling Association National Championships, which were held March 30 and April 1 in Livonia, Mich. Team California placed first with 335.5 points, almost double the points of Team Michigan, which was second.
McChesney traveled to the nationals with Robert Redman, president of the California Women’s Wrestling Association, and seven of California’s other top female wrestlers. Seven of the eight wrestlers coached by Redman placed in the top 12.
The nationals were attended by over 700 wrestlers.
McChesney was first at the Washington State Championships and third at the Oregon State Championships for the California Women’s Wrestling Association last month.

Vicky Deely of Justin-Siena was named Third-Team on the San Francisco Chronicle’s All-Metro girls basketball team. The Braves’ Kevin Dougherty was chosen honorable mention for boys in the North Bay.
Deely was named as the Napa County Player of the Year after averaging 23.4 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game.
Dougherty was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year in the county after leading the Marin County Athletic League with 17.4 points per game. He also averaged 3.0 rebounds.

Samantha Trask of Napa tied for 13th individually for the Santa Clara University women’s golf team at the Peg Barnard California Collegiate earlier this month. Trask, who went to Napa High, had rounds of 77 and 71 for a 6-over-par 148 total on the 6,037-yard Stanford Golf Course.

Cami Zeller, Corinne Schafle and Crysta Deus of Napa were selected to be on the central area cadet team of the Central California Zone (USA water polo).
Zeller is a sophomore at Napa High, Schafle is an eighth grader at St. John’s Catholic, and Deus is an eighth grader at River School. They will be part of a 19-player team that will compete in Modesto in hopes of making the Central California zone team.

Vintage graduate Ricci Robben continues to play well for the University of Wisconsin softball team.
Robben went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs in the Badgers’ 6-4 win over North Dakota State at the Goodman Softball Complex in Madison, Wis., last week. The team’s designated hitter, she also was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI in Wisconsin’s 5-0 Big Ten victory over Iowa.

Emily Talley of Napa shot 74-79 — 153 to win the girls 15-17 division at the Sacramento City Junior Easter Championship at Bing Maloney Golf Course. Talley captured the Junior Golf Association of Northern California premier event by four strokes over Candace Chan.

College Sports Television will carry UC Berkeley’s non-conference football game at Colorado State Sept. 8 starting at 11 a.m. It’s a national broadcast.

Sarah O’Neill hit her fifth home run of the year to lead the UC Davis softball team to a 7-0 win over UC Riverside April 7. O’Neill, a Vintage graduate who plays left field, drove in two runs.

Arizona State first baseman Brett Wallace was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs as the Sun Devils beat Stanford 12-8 in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game in Tempe, Ariz., earlier this month. Wallace, who now has 12 homers, is a former Justin-Siena standout.

Napa High graduate and Santa Rosa Junior College transfer Marquis Hundley is listed second on the University of Arizona depth chart at cornerback. Hundley was All-Monticello Empire League and All-Napa County for Napa.

Napa’s Krista Hill was in the No. 5 seat for the Cal State Sacramento varsity eight rowing team, which lost by a half second to UC Davis in the Jean Runyon Cup April 7 at the Hornets’ aquatic center in Gold River, Calif.
Hill is a 2003 Napa High graduate who played four years of softball and two years of golf and volleyball.

Matt Leonard pitched six innings and got a no-decision for Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo in the Mustangs’ 9-8 win over Cal State Northridge April 6. Leonard, who played at Justin-Siena, gave up five hits, four runs (all earned), walked two and struck out 12.

Cameron Cruz and the Diablo Valley Soccer Club Black Pearl defeated the Santa Cruz Breakers 3-0 last weekend in Morgan Hill to move into the quarterfinals of California Youth Soccer Association State Cup play for the under-17 boys bracket.
DVSC will play Roosevelt from Fresno, an 8-1 winner over the Mt. Diablo Blast. The quarterfinals will be played Saturday in Turlock.
Cruz, who attends Trinity Prep in Napa, plays goalkeeper for the Black Pearl, who were ranked 10th in the US Club Soccer national rankings entering the State Cup.

The Cal State Sacramento football team, which has Kyle Tahsler of Napa, opens the year Sept. 1 at Fresno State. After road games against Portland State and New Mexico, the Hornets open their home campaign Sept. 29 against Northern Arizona.
Tahsler, an offensive lineman, played at Napa High and Solano Community College-Suisun. He was All-Bay Valley Conference for Solano as a sophomore.

Scott McCarron, a Vintage graduate who played his junior golf out of Silverado Resort, worked as an announcer for The Golf Channel during its coverage of the Masters at Augusta National.
He was granted a major medical extension for the 2007 PGA Tour season after being limited to 15 events last year due to season-ending right elbow surgery Aug. 16.
McCarron has won three PGA Tour events.
