Situated on two acres of zinfandel vines, the home of Pam and Bill Connolly rises from the valley floor like a Tuscan castle, complete with a stonework rear entrance, arched openings and massive chimneys.
Guests enter into an impressive living room, complete with soaring 22 foot ceiling. Centered on the far wall is the fireplace with an intricately carved Goddington mantle. Named after Lord Goddington of Kent, England, the mantle is Renaissance Revival design. Two 17th century Flemish tapestries in an atypical rectangular shape flank the fireplace. Windows overlook the vineyards and the lap pool with fountain.
“My wife, Pam, and I have owned this vineyard property for 10 years, and always had the idea that we’d build our home here,” said owner Bill Connolly. “This is our dream house.”
The Connolly home is one of five that are part of this year’s Kitchen in the Vineyards’ tour, set for April 28. Along with their noteworthy kitchens, guests will tour entertainment areas, dining rooms and gardens. This is the 10th anniversary of this fundraiser for Music in the Vineyards, a nationally acclaimed chamber music festival held each August in the Napa Valley. The three-week festival showcases artists-in-residence performing new and classic chamber music repertoire in winery settings.
The Connolly’s architect was Michael Davis of DZ Design and John Wargo was the builder. Pam Connolly designed the interior.
Guests to the Connolly’s home get to see not one, but two kitchens, one indoor and one outside. The spacious indoor kitchen feels cozy with its yellow and blue stained Chalon cabinets in an English country design. East facing cabinets by the window are glassed front and back to let in the morning light. Cabinetry hides the Viking refrigerator.
Surfaces are covered in Alder wood and Carrara marble. The corner prep area features two adjacent sinks for different tasks. Nearby is a Bosch wine glass washer. The kitchen also has two GE Profile dishwashers. Continuing around the room, the main stainless steel sink is by Blanco. A gleaming copper-hooded stove crowns the Viking oven.
“We used these all the time,” said Connolly, indicating two warming drawers. “In one we keep food warm and the other plates.”
Owner Connolly said since moving in last November he and his wife have used the charming hand-painted pizza oven (created by Gastelum Stone Mason) to ward off chilly mornings.
The centerpiece of the room is the enormous antique island from a convent. It, too, features Carrara marble and wood surface.
“The finish on the walls is unusual,” said Connolly. “It’s made from granules of marble mixed with the paint. It’s five layers of coats which gives the feeling of being very old.”
Artist Cindy Raye did the kitchen finishing work.
The ceiling is plastered and raked, in an Old World style. Squared Alder wood in a parquet pattern complete the kitchen.
A copper sink is the focal point of a butlers’ pantry a few steps away.
The outdoor kitchen is a family favorite. It features a Wolf grill, refrigerator, sink and plenty of seating. The kitchen window serves as a pass-through.
The grounds have a separate guesthouse, entertaining patio and iron sculptures. The owners plan to add a park and duck pond near the rear-facing entrance.
Each home on the self-guided Kitchens in the Vineyards tour will be styled by designers and florists, and will include enhanced table settings. There will be cooking demonstrations and tastings, courtesy of noted Napa Valley chefs and caterers from restaurants including Celadon, Angèle and Fumé Bistro. Food authors will be on hand to autograph copies of their cookbooks.
Steve Gregory of Morgan Lane Real Estate sponsors the tour.
“This tour is really a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ for design work in Napa Valley,” said Joan Lounsbery, executive director of Music in the Vineyards. “The wealth of connections is worth the trip to each of these homes.”
The tour runs 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 28. A Preview Party takes place on April 27 beginning at 4 p.m. Guests will board a mini-bus for a Champagne tour and first look at the homes and will return to Yountville’s Vintage 1870 for a private dinner party. Preview Party tickets are limited and are available for $175.
Tickets for Saturday’s tour are $45. Info, www.musicinthevineyards.org or 258-5559.
