Golfer, 27, emerges from coma after heart attack
By Register Staff
Drew Richesin, a Napa Valley College freshman golfer, is in the intensive care unit at Queen of the Valley Regional Medical Center after suffering a heart attack at his home in Napa on March 29, Storm coach Jim Wiechers said. Richesin, 27, had played in a Big 7 Conference tournament earlier that day.
Wiechers said he received word Wednesday night that Richesin, who won 20 tournaments as a junior golfer, was alert and recognizing those around him after being in a coma for six days.
“He’s a father figure to the team — a wonderful young man who is excited about playing golf for us,” said Wiechers.
Doctors put Richesin, who attended North Tonawanda High School in New York, on life support and dialysis. Richesin had an enlarged heart when doctors examined him, said Wiechers.
Wiechers delivered a card that was signed by coaches and players from each of the schools in the Big 7 Conference — made up of Napa Valley, Sierra-Rocklin, San Joaquin Delta-Stockton, Santa Rosa, American River-Sacramento, Shasta-Redding and Butte-Oroville — to Richesin’s family this week. Richesin has played as one of Napa Valley’s top six golfers throughout the year.
“It’s been an emotional few days,” said Wiechers. “You just don’t expect it. It’s very shocking.”
NVC had an incomplete team for the Big 7’s eighth tournament of the year at Elkhorn Country Club in Stockton Tuesday. Brian Detweiler (80), Chad Allen (80), Heedrin Bustamante (83) and John Crescines (85) played for the Storm.
Sierra won with a 372 and was followed by Delta (375), Santa Rosa (378), ARC (393), Shasta (405) and Butte (407). The medalist was Steve Edman from Sierra with a 3-under-par 68.
