Vacaville is undefeated and in first place, but the hottest baseball team in the Monticello Empire League may reside in the city of Napa.

That would be the Napa High School Indians, who made it three wins in a row by shutting out visiting Wood Wednesday, 2-0, as Jason Westerberg threw a complete-game two-hitter and Robbie Steen drove in two runs on a two-out single to left field in the third inning.
“It’s good to throw well and then have a defense that can pick you up at the same time,” said Westerberg.

Napa (7-7 overall, 3-3 MEL) also got exceptional defense, both from its infield and outfield, in a game that took just an hour and 28 minutes to play. The Indians turned two double plays behind Westerberg, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander, who struck out nine, walked two, hit two batters and sent down seven in a row to end the game on a humid, overcast afternoon.
“It seems like everything’s coming together now,” said Westerberg. “We have this saying called ‘family.’ I think we’re getting closer and closer — that’s why we’ve been playing better ball together.”

Catcher Ted LeMasters threw out Chad Alden at third base to complete a strikeout-throwout double play in the second inning.
After making a catch in right field for the second out of the fifth inning, John Boyett threw a bullet to Steen, the cutoff man-first baseman, who then threw a strike to LeMasters for the putout of Adam Kruzona for a sparkling double play that kept Wood scoreless.

Ryan Kostecka’s spectacular catch in center field, followed by dazzling plays on grounders from third baseman Michael Santora and Chad Albrecht at shortstop in a 1-2-3 seventh inning capped a day of overall defensive brilliance by Napa, which continues its season Friday at Wood as part of the league’s home-and-home format. The Indians will also play in the Adam Westcott Tournament next week at Casa Grande-Petaluma.

“The pitching today as well as the defense was quite impressive,” said Napa coach Todd Pridy. “That was an entertaining game to watch.”

The offense did its part as well. Mike Galindez held Napa to seven hits and the Indians left five runners on base, but all the run support Westerberg would need came in the third inning.

Back-to-back hits with two out by Santora and LeMasters set the stage for Steen, the clean-up hitter. He came through big time, plating both runners with a single down the left-field line by turning on an inside fastball on a 1-1 count.

“I just tried to make contact and put the barrel on the ball. That’s what happened and it found a hole,” said Steen. “For me it was pretty big, but I think it was even bigger for the ballclub. We’ve been in a lot of close games that we haven’t come out winners of. It was good to get a close one today. It shows that we can fight.

“Our defense is playing well and our pitching is doing great. We’ve just got to keep swinging it.”

Napa left runners in scoring position in the first and second innings, and the Indians hit into an inning-ending double play in the fifth with the bases loaded and one out.

“We had a couple of other opportunities and didn’t really cash in, so Robbie’s hit was huge for us,” said Pridy.

Kostecka had two hits, including a double, as the team’s leadoff hitter. Nick Placone doubled and Boyett singled.

“We’ve gone through some struggles. I hope we’re turning a corner,” Pridy said. “Right now we’re just trying to get our ship pointed in the right direction. The hustle and enthusiasm is there that we want to see. I’ve had so many of these guys for so many years, I know there’s more we can get out of them. I’m still waiting for that offense to click in.”

The only hits Westerberg — who throws a fastball, curve and changeup — allowed came from Kyle Babb in the first inning and Kruzona in the fifth. Wood (6-8 overall, 3-3 MEL) left four runners on base.

“Jason’s effort today was quite impressive,” said Pridy. “It’s been fun to watch him develop and grow. He was able to locate his fastball very well. He threw a couple of changeups in there that were pretty good pitches.”

Wood also had some first-rate defensive gems, as Robert Shafer (center field) and Jon Fleishman (left field) both made great running catches.
