Sports capsule: Napa Track Club gets out of the blocks
Twenty-seven athletes from the Napa Track Club attended the Santa Rosa Express Sectional Track Meet March 31.
This was the club’s first meet of the 2007 season and its young competitors, age 7 to 14, took part in 78 events. The meet was highly competitive, with 38 clubs from all over Northern California represented.
Napa had several standout performances, with three members earning first-place finishes. Four individuals set marks good enough to qualify for this year’s Youth National Championships in Chicago.
Brendan Cardey, 11, won the boys turbo javelin with a toss of 100 feet — a throw that qualified him to compete in the national championships. Chris Bozzini, 11, won the high jump with a national qualifying height of 4-6. He also placed third in the long jump.
Mackenzie Mills, competing in the high jump for the first time, won her age division and qualified for nationals with a leap of 4-3. The 12-year-old Mills also had a second place finish in her 200-meter race and a fourth in the 400 to complete her outstanding day.
Claire Miller, 11, had a toss of 56-1 in the girls turbo javelin, which was good enough to qualify her for nationals and earned her a third-place finish. Her time of 5:59 in the 1500 was good enough for a sixth-place finish.
Other club members with high finishes in the girls divisions were Sarah Tracy with a second in the high jump and a fourth in the 400 meters, Donna Roscoe with a third in the long jump, Claudia Torkelson with fourth-place finishes in the 100 and 200, Ashley Agustus with a fourth in the high jump and a fifth in the 1500, and Rachel Taylor with a fourth in the 400.
The boys were paced by Eric Zoller, who won his heat in the 200, took second in the 400, and placed fifth in the long jump. Others with good performances were Ret Torkelson with a second in the 100 and a third in the 200, Jonathan Kinda with a fifth in the 100, Grant Smith with a fourth in the 100 and a fifth in the long jump, and Kennedy Salsman with a fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles.
The club’s next meet will be a sectional qualifier in Novato April 14./Register
