A homeless man was killed in north Napa Thursday night as he and a female companion were struck by a vehicle as they crossed Redwood Road, just west of Solano Avenue.

The name of the 61-year-old victim has not been released pending notification of his family, according to the county coroner's office. "We believe we know who the man is, but at this time we are not able to confirm his identity," Napa County Sheriff's Lt. Tom Commander said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman, Rapaula Rodden, 39, suffered multiple injuries and was taken by ambulance to Queen of the Valley Regional Medical Center.
Rodden was listed in stable condition Friday evening, according the a nursing supervisor at the Queen.

Daniel Palmer, 59, of Napa was westbound on Redwood Road when he came upon the pair crossing the street, Police Sgt. Paul Paniagua said. "The victims were not in a crosswalk. They were carrying some sacks."
Paniagua said it was not clear whether Palmer saw the couple and was unable to stop or didn't see them until his car struck them.

"They both were wearing dark clothing," he said. "The street lighting is adequate at that location because of the several street lights and businesses on that stretch of the road."

Paniagua said it does not appear that alcohol was a factor in the accident for the driver.

"We will have to wait for toxicology test results from the two pedestrians," he said.

This is the first traffic death in the city of Napa this year. Thursday's victim was the fourth person to die on Napa County roadways this year.

Calistoga residents Aaron Porter, 21, and Alexandra Finney, 17, were killed March 19 when the pickup they were traveling in was involved in a crash on Silverado Trail near Bale Lane.

Another fatal accident took place the following day. Jennifer Haden, 39, also of Calistoga and who was four months pregnant, died in a three-car crash in Yountville, on Highway 29 south of Madison Avenue.

" If Jennifer Haden was pregnant, that would make it the 5th fatality on Napa County roadways this year. "

" The Problem is the lack of Street lights on all napa city streets. The driver of the car must have been sober,or he would be called a killer. So who is to blame? I think the homeless man was. You can't just cross a busy street whan and where you want to. "

" I concur with Republican Kid. There is so much emphasis given on cars just being the problem. However how many pedistrians and bicyclists do not follow the vehicle code themselves by jaywalking or cutting through an intersection with reckless abandon! It is a two way street and yes, we must have respect for each other! It is sad though...try driving through any street be it Napa, Vallejo, or San Francisco, and you will know what I'm talking about! Cars are not the only problem! "

" To "JJR"...how cold and insensitive can you possibly be...a MOTHER was killed...and so was her unborn child...come on! Have some compassion for the rest of their family! "

" I also must concur with George's comments. As a long time commuter to S.F. I cannot tell you how many times I've slammed on my brakes because people will just step out into the crosswalk. Are they crossing the street? No!they step out there to see if the Muni bus is coming. The bus will arrive when it arrives and not a moment sooner! After a while one becomes hardened to every person that looks like they're going to cross the street because I'm not sure what their intention is.Should I always use caution?Of course! But as George stated above not everyone obeys the law.The grim reality is that a painted crosswalk line doesn't stop a 2,000 lb. car.Regardless of who might have broken whatever law there is, the pedestrian always loses.Being alive is much better than being right. Please folks when you're crossing the street(legally or otherwise)don't assume a driver sees you and they're going to stop. The life you save may be your own! " In response to "Serious", I do have great compassion and sadness to the families of those who were lost. All families involved. Please do not take my comment as me not. I was just expressing my point of view regarding a the fact that the unborn baby was not considered in the fatalities. Which, I realize is a hot topic. "

" P.S. I do greatly apologize if I did cause any undue grief to the family or friends of those who have passed in these unfortunate situations from my original statement. It was not my intention and if I did, I hope that they will accept my heartfelt apology. My statement was only to address a side issue. Was not intending to be insensitive or cold. "

" Its time for the City of Napa to make long range plans to install "lighted crosswalks" near schools, senior centers and streets that have high traffic flow. "
