Tom Bonfigli stepped down Friday after 12 years as Justin-Siena High School’s head boys basketball coach to accept the head coaching job at Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa, the runner-up in this year’s CIF State Division IV finals.
Bonfigli, who coached at Cardinal Newman, his alma mater, from 1980-95, will be replaced by Phil Rosemurgy, who has been an assistant girls basketball coach at Justin-Siena.
The announcement was made Friday by Brother Robert Wickman, Justin-Siena’s president-principal. A simultaneous announcement was made at Cardinal Newman, which lost 70-34 in the state finals last weekend to Campbell Hall-North Hollywood at Arco Arena in Sacramento.
“We thank Tom for his dedicated service to students and student-athletes at Justin-Siena and wish him well as he enjoys his new surroundings and especially enjoys a very short commute,” Brother Robert said in a statement released by the school Friday.
Bonfigli, a Santa Rosa resident, led Justin-Siena to a 22-8 overall record and to the quarterfinals of the CIF North Coast Section Division IV playoffs. It was a milestone year for Bonfigli, who achieved his 500th coaching victory in a 25-year-long career. He was named the Register's Coach of the Year for the 2006-07 boys basketball season.
Bonfigli, who has a 224-121 record with the Braves, will continue to teach history classes until the end of the school year at Justin-Siena. He has had 15 teams with more than 20 wins in a season and two with more than 30 wins in a season.
Bonfigli replaces Russ Gardiner, who served Cardinal Newman this past year in an interim coach capacity.
Rosemurgy leaves the Justin-Siena girls team to take over a boys program, which is coming off a fourth-place finish in the MCAL and returns several key players.
“Phil has been an assistant coach in our girls basketball program and has extensive experience coaching boys and girls at the high school and collegiate levels,” said Brother Robert. “We look forward to Phil’s service to our student-athletes and know that you will join me in welcoming him to his new role in our school.”
