Today we launch the latest new feature in the Register, one that I'm fired up about.

On page C1, in the Real Napa section, is the first installment of a monthly contest called "Where in Napa Valley is Š"
We've taken photos of three unusual spots around the valley, places you might have noticed and wondered about. If you know all three and can correctly identify where they are, you might be in line for a prize.

If you don't know where these landmarks are, you can find out on the last Sunday in April, when we publish short essays about the places in today's photos. We'll also publish the name of this month's contest winner and three more photos to ponder for another prize.
On Friday, I walked around the newsroom with a mock-up of today's page C1, asking my colleagues if they knew the places in the photos.

Two Napa County natives didn't know any of the three, even a prominent one not far from their hometown. Jillian and Carlos, you guys have to get out more often.
A few steps from Carlos' desk, there is sort of a Veterans Row. Three reporters with a collective 95 years of Register experience sit side by side along one wall. Two were in the house Friday, and I showed them the page.

Each could name two of the spots, but not the third. To their right, a Michigander who moved to the valley several years ago got the one the veterans didn't know. But he couldn't name the other two places.

I had a hand in selecting the photos, so I know all three. But there are hundreds of unusual monuments and features around the valley I could not identify.

Since deciding to launch the contest, I've spotted possible entries everywhere. For example, there are some mighty unusual landscaping objects in one spot on Jefferson Street in Napa, a pink cow grazes Upvalley on a slope above Silverado Trail, and until very recently a Laurel Street home had an arbor that only a leprechaun could pass under with ease.

When Register Photo Editor Andrea Roth went to get an image of the arbor, however, it was gone. Word is the arbor had not always been so low, but that the vine that arched over the wooden frame had separated from its moorings, drooping so that a person of normal height would have had to do the limbo to start up the walkway to the home's front door.

That little Old Town relic is gone, just before we could immortalize it in our contest. But, there are many more known only to those of you with an eagle eye. We hope to capture them three at a time.

On Monday, we will launch a column called Senior Corner, from the delightful and well-informed Betty Rhodes. Rhodes has plenty of ideas for seniors on getting active and engaged, and wants to tell good stories by and about the older and wiser members of the community. Look for her column in section C on Monday.
