AmCan considers extending 4th of July festivities into longer affair

American Canyon’s Fourth of July celebration could become a two-day affair, despite the concerns of some elected officials.

The city’s Fourth of July Committee wants to schedule Independence Day events on July 3 and 4, in part to draw more people to the city and attract vendors. The national holiday this year falls on a Wednesday.
Traditionally, the city’s Fourth of July events have included children’s games, food and local music and dance groups. Charities and vendors staff as many as 60 booths at Community Park 1.

City Councilwoman Cindy Coffey, who chairs this year’s Fourth of July Committee, said the committee wanted to try “something new” this year. Having a two-day event will attract “quality vendors,” she told the City Council.
“It’s a huge opportunity,” Coffey said.

The idea, however, has raised concerns from other city council members who wonder who will pay for the cost of having public works, police and fire staff to work a second day.
“The city is going to be on the hook,” City Councilman Ed West warned.

West, who said he’s always enjoyed the city’s Fourth of July celebrations as they are, also said he does not want turn the event into a “retail operation” for out-of-town visitors.

“I don’t want those crowds,” West said. The city has had “quality events” for 10 years, he said.

Vice Mayor Joan Bennett cautioned that parents may not be present on July 3, a Tuesday, to supervise their children.

The City Council later directed Randy Davis, the city’s Community Services director, to prepare a breakdown of the costs of past years’ events. That report may be presented at the council’s April 5 meeting, Davis said.

Over the past couple of years, the city’s Fourth of July Committee has raised money to rent stages and portable toilets, hire security guards and cover the costs of other Independence Day-related activities.

The city’s Fourth of July Committee spent about $11,000 in 2006, Davis said.

The city sponsors the morning parade through town and the evening’s fireworks. The fireworks display and the extra insurance required add up to $15,000, Davis explained.

Davis said the city accounts for “every nickel” the committee members raise.

“As of right now, I don’t believe any money has been raised,” Davis said.

Cori Badertscher, chairwoman of the city’s Fourth of July Committee for the past three years, said she has reservations about having a two-day event.

She is concerned that parents will not come out on July 3. “It would work on the weekend,” said Badertscher.

She is also not certain that charities have enough volunteers to staff booths on both days.

“I think it’s a valiant effort but I’m not convinced it’s going to work,” she said.

" The 4th of July is on a Wednesday and the two day event would be Tuesday and Wednesday not Thursday and Friday as reported. "

" First off the Fourth of July is not on a friday in the year 2007. It is a stupid idea to try and make this a two day event. Who is going to attend the event on the 3rd of July. Most people work for a living. If the city allows this it will be nothing more than a total disaster, and a waist of the city money. Councilwoman Coffee needs to stop chairing this event if these are the ideas she is going to come up with. "

" I too agree with those who question a two day event which falls on a weekday. If neighboring Vallejo doesn't hold an annual event this year due to it's city's financial woes, it may sound like a nice alternative. Although I don't neccessarily see a large entourage of people coming to AC just for a Independance Festival, traffic, city services, are among many issues to be considered before this becomes a two day event. " They can't afford to build enough schools and sewage facilities because they let the developers walk away with insufficient fees, how can they afford this frivolity? "

" It is amazing to me that an event that was created by the Lion's Club in AC could get so messed up when the City took over. It is well known in town that this event has gone downhill for the last several years. Interesting enough I guess the budget and expenses will be revealed at a future meeting. That should shed some light on the accusations that have been made in the past. Unfortunately for those of us that live here...due to the individuals that continue to be vocal about each other, we the residents have to suffer the consequences due to their childish behavior. Grow-Up! "

" My family has lived in American Canyon for nearly five years and we have enjoyed the 4th of July festivities since we came. I love that we can walk a block and a half to the park and watch the fireworks up close and personal. It is one special day a year, and being a former resident of Napa city I can honestly say that I enjoy our celebrations more than what they do up there. The idea of making it a two day event just flat out seems silly to me. Why? For more "quality vendors"? Is councilwomoan Coffey saying we aren't "quality" as we are? Is she implying that all the people who have enjoyed the festivities over the last decade do so because they don't know any better? People...wake up and smell the Coffey! It is burning...a hole in our pockets! "

" Yes quality is important to council member Coffey. But the problem being she does not know when to quit with her own quality control. She has been heard publicly stating that she "classifies" AmCan homes into 3 categories. Beginning with the area she lives in as upper middle class, then homes that run behind Safeway as middle class and then the Rancho area as low class. I find these statements entertaining coming from an individual who has had to file bankruptcy in the past and to current is still having financial difficulties. Hey out there... Anybody remember the ball?? "
