Few leads in recent Napa attacks
Murder, shooting investigations continue

Police are still trying to unravel the crimes and pinpoint suspects in a homicide and separate attempted murder in downtown Napa this year.
Probes of the February death of Juan Arajo Baez, 38, and the January shooting of Ryan Geoghegan, 27, continue, but police are still seeking more information.
Baez, 38, was stabbed multiple times Feb. 24 and was discovered around 9:30 p.m. on the corner of Main and Clinton streets. Baez, who was homeless, was taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital, but died a short time later.
Geoghegan, 27, was shot once in the torso on the evening of Jan. 16, while he walked with a friend in a parking lot off Main Street, near Mervyns. He has recovered from his injuries.
Napa Police Cmdr. Steve Potter said his department has not been able to gather enough evidence to make an arrest. Detectives are not releasing any motives in either case. Neither the murder weapon in the stabbing nor the gun used in the Geoghegan shooting have been recovered.
Napa Police Detective Todd Shulman, lead detective in the Baez case, said police continue to talk to people who knew Baez in hopes of finding someone who can shed some light on the case. Baez, who had been in Napa since April 2005, was known to local peace officers.
“He had been arrested several times for things like drunk in public. He has never been arrested in Napa for any violent crimes,” Shulman said.
Baez was attacked on a well-lit street corner that has a fair share of foot traffic. “It happened about the time people were leaving restaurants and the movies were either starting or ending. We are hoping someone saw something and will come forward,” he said.
Geoghegan and his male friend had been at a downtown bar on Main Street before the attack happened. Before the shooting, Geoghegan’s friend got into an argument with several men outside the bar.
Geoghegan and his friend left the bar just after midnight when they were confronted by two men. One man pulled a gun and shot Geoghegan.
Neither Geoghegan nor his friend were able to provide police with a detailed description of the men.
Anyone with information about the Baez homicide can call Shulman at 257-9575.
Anyone with information about the Geoghegan case can call Detective Don Winegar at 258-7879.
