De-stressing tips

I've often noticed what stressful lives some people have. They endure hectic schedules that include reading masses of paperwork that crosses their desk in a day, handling the kids' activities, traveling for business, or being called to community service.
This busy pace takes its toll. Getting organized can give you some peace of mind. Knowing where things are, continually purging so you can remember what you actually own, and taking pride in your space, all minimize stress.

Several other things can give your a sense of calmness and slow down your heart rate.
First, try slowing down, period. This is one area that I struggle with. But it's worth it. When I manage to get to a yoga class or take time to meditate, I breathe differently, I feel grounded and at peace. Any physical activity helps to get rid of stress. Dr. Weil, a physician and nutritionist, suggests that 20 minutes of exercise a day will make a huge difference in releasing stress and will help you to think more clearly. For me, this is the No. 1 de-stressor.

Second, say no a little more often. It de-clutters your calendar and gives you more space to be in control. I recently met a fantastic woman in the Napa Valley who is a member of four boards here. She loves to be of service, but I reminded her that she is the most important person in her calendar and she needs to put herself in it more often.
Third, be mindful of your entertainment. When I watch movies, every other movie has to be a comedy. I'm minimizing the amount of dark, depressing foreign films that I see and have started to take life a little lighter. Even with music, I want something more playful and easy on the ears. I often spend time with no background noise and find the silence helps me to become aware of many other wonderful things in life.

Last, it's all about moving the "chi" the "pran" and the energy in our body, and not to keep things in. You don't want to hold on to hurtful emotions that manifest in body ailments. You can create a peaceful environment by minimizing clutter in your life and consciously choosing happiness over sadness. This allows us more time to relax, breathe and enjoy the company of your family, friends, animals and nature. You can create a life that you love, and not feel the need to run to this and that for your happiness.
