Three people were hurt when two pickups crashed on Highway 29 at Zinfandel Lane on Friday morning.

Around 7:30 a.m., Merle Thomas, 52, of Middletown, was southbound on the highway traveling between 45 to 50 miles per hour, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Okilon Martinez, 44, of Napa was westbound on Zinfandel Lane. When Martinez reached the intersection, he failed to stop at the stop sign and darted into southbound Highway 29 traffic, the CHP said.

Martinez's Chevy pickup broadsided Thomas' truck, the CHP said. Both vehicles shot over to the right shoulder and overturned, the CHP said.
Thomas, Martinez and his passenger, Dart Smith, 50, of Cloverdale, suffered minor to moderate injuries and all three were taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital, the CHP said.

Alleged DUI cyclists busted
The CHP pulled over three out-of-state bicyclists for riding their bikes down the middle of Highway 29 after dark.

A CHP officer spotted the riders around 9 p.m., Thursday, southbound on Highway 29, near Madison Avenue in Yountville. One of the cyclists had crashed into a parked car, CHP Officer Jerry Rico said.

The men had spent the day wine tasting, Rico said. "All three of them had alcohol blood levels above the legal limit."

Michael Newman, 22, of Pennsylvania, ran into a parked vehicle, Rico said. "His injuries were minor."

Newman, along with his friends, Joseph Caruso, 23, of Virginia, and Brian Bozzo, 22, of New York, were taken to the Napa County jail and booked for misdemeanor DUI.

Rico said the men were wearing bike helmets. He did not know if their bicycles were equipped with lights.

Make threats, go to jail

A Napa man went to jail early Friday morning after a 41-year-old man accused the Napan of roughing him up and threatening him, according to police.

The accuser told police he and Melvin Lafranchi, 59, were arguing over a key at a residence in the 1500 block of Park Avenue, police said.

The man said Lafranchi grabbed him by the neck, pushed him against the wall and threatened to kill him, police said.

The accuser called police. When they arrived, they found Lafranchi hiding in an upstairs crawl space, police said.

" And if they hadn't caught them and they were hit and killed you'd probably be complaining then too.... "
