In the wake of a strange interaction between a male adult driver and two young girls on Thursday, the Napa County Sheriff's Department is looking deeper into a report of a suspicious man driving an older Mercedes Benz around the Vichy Avenue area.

Parents of Vichy Elementary School students have expressed concern the man may be trying to contact their children in an attempt to abduct them.
"As far as we know now, this man has committed no crime," Napa County Undersheriff Mike Loughran said on Friday morning. "At this time we just want to talk to him. He is not wanted by law enforcement. No children have been abducted."

Parents started getting the jitters when the Napa Valley Unified School District used Connect-Ed -- a telephone communication system used to contact every parent who has a child in district schools -- to issue an alert about a situation that occurred around 4 p.m. Thursday on Rose Lane, off Silverado Trail, near Vichy School.
Witnesses told police a man turned on Rose Lane and parked his Mercedes near a yard where two young girls were playing. He got out of the car and started wiping down the vehicle with a towel.

Loughran said the girls asked him what he was doing and he responded saying he was washing his car and asked them if they wanted to help. The girls said no, and reported the incident to their parents. The driver of the Mercedes left. When police arrived, they showed the girls' father a picture of a registered sex offender who lives in the area. The father identified the man as the one who was driving the Mercedes.
Deputies went to the sex offender's home. "We confirmed that man has been out of the country for several weeks," Loughran said.

Loughran said he considered the actions of the Mercedes driver to be suspicious.

"We do believe he could have had an ulterior motive that may have involved the children. It's a strange place to stop your car and start wiping it down," Loughran said. "But it's not a crime. Even if we found this guy, we could not arrest him. He has done nothing against the law."

Children and their parents were met by sheriff's deputies on Friday morning at Vichy School.

"Because parents were concerned, we thought it was a good idea to increase patrol in the area. If this man is frequenting the area, we want to stop him and talk to him," Loughran said. "This is also a good reminder to parents that they need to talk to their children about being aware of their surroundings. Abductions can happen anywhere, anytime. Parent need to keep an eye on their children and keep them informed of what they should and should not do if they are faced with this type of situation."

School officials decided to use the district-wide communication alert system to let parents know they need to talk to their kids about possible abductions, according to a NVUSD spokeswoman.

The system was activated to quell rumors and give parents accurate information. It also gave the description of the man and his vehicle.

The man is described as about 55, 5-feet-11, 185 pounds with curly gray hair. The vehicle he is driving is an older blue or silver Mercedes Benz.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's department at 253-4591.

Mob mentality at its best. Maybe some day one time not foreced sex offenders will be treated as a person that has served their time. "

" How many times have I washed my Mercedies and after washing, have taken the car for a short dive, pulled over and dried the car? I can not tell, however I will admit I often do it. If two children come up to me and ask what I am doing and I say I am drying the car followed by "do you want to help" is simple freindly conversation. But do not come looking for me for questioning because I have sold the Mercedies and I now live in San Francisco, where I ride the bus and actually talk to people. Bryan "

" You're shown a pix of a sex offender after your child has been baited, and in the heat of the moment your going to say, "Damned right that's him!" Stupid cops wasted a lot of time and energy, and it's a good thing the guy wasn't home or he'd be in jail, guilty or (obviously) not. Geeeezzzz.... "

" I was one of the parents who received the phone call from the school district. I as a parent was definitely alerted to the healthy reminder to "remind" my children to be aware of their surroundings and of the dangers that lurk in our society. While this person may have been innocent it is just as possible that he wasn't. Thank you for reporting and for the phone call. "

" Rob: Sounds like the story hits home. Sex offenders have a higher chance of commiting the same crime, more than any other violation or crime. So yes, the mob starts with the SUSPECTS. That's the reason for Megan's list, for notifiyng neighbors about these predators, and why the detectives had this man's picture. If the mob had its way the death penalty would likely be enforced on felony child crimes! "

" Better safe than sorry. I'm sure Rob would be the first one to blame the Sheriff's department if they didn't check the guy out and he turned out to be the man in question. They're registered sex offenders for a reason. Kudos to the parents of the girls for raising aware children. "

" How can this guy be out of the country and washing his car on Rose Lane at the same time? And how about giving the public a better description of this guy? What's his race? eye color? Does he have the classic "child molester moustache?" What model is his Mercedes? And which color is it, blue or silver? And like Rob says, showing the girls' father just one picture of one guy is very suggestive. According to the Megan's law website, there don't appear to be any registered sex offenders in Napa matching the description "55, 5-feet-11, 185 pounds with curly gray hair." The guy in the Mercedes isn't necessarily the particular sex offender; he could be anybody. How about giving the public some more information? "

" While the sheriff's deputies are out there watching, how about catching some of the speeders on Vichy. They are a major threat to people on the street. And while you're at it stop some of the motorcycles with no mufflers that blast down Vichy. "

" I am really surprised by most of the blogs here. Sounds like most are defending this guy. It sounds very suspicious. Weird at the least. Bryan Poli, I don't know, are you being sarcastic? Really? You would drive your car around, stop near some young girls, and ask them if they want to help you, a total stranger, to help you dry your car? Really??? As a father, I'd be in your face in 10 seconds. Glad to hear you live in san Franciso and not Napa. "

" It is such a shame that we live in such a suspicious age. I hope that it was an innocent act, but I shall certainly be talking to my children again about stranger awareness. "

" Don't take the blogs on this site too seriously. They represent the same 30% of Napa about 90% of the time. ;-) "
