Napa medical center foundation draws crowd of doctors, leaders, even a ‘Phantom’

The cream of the medical profession in Napa held a dramatic fundraiser Saturday evening, capped by a performance of music from the award-winning “Phantom of the Opera.”

Queen of the Valley Hospital Foundation’s “Queen’s Ball” drew 200 exquisitely clad individuals to the Silverado Resort, from doctors and hospital administrators to leaders in several Napa industries, to raise money for the city’s largest health care organization.
Luminaries included Queen Foundation trustees such as Cindy Brockmeyer; Joanne DePuy — one of many who served as a gracious greeter for the event — Dey Labs CEO Mel Engle and former Napa Mayor Ed Henderson and his wife, Marie.

After an invocation by Sister Marian Schubert, who is the hospital’s vice president for mission integration, Silverado Executive Chef Peter Pahk put on a show.
His four-course meal was capped by a decadent dessert including a white chocolate mask reminiscent of the one worn by the phantom himself, only tastier.

During dinner, auctioneer Greg Quiroga of Reynolds & Buckley found spirited audience response to live auction lots ranging from a 39-bottle selection (including a ’43 Beringer Brothers red donated by Ray Nasuti) with wine refrigerator; a special meal overnighted from the best kitchens in New Orleans to the home of Queen trustee Camie Bianchi; a single package offering dinner for four at 13 top valley restaurants, including La Toque and Redd; and a separate lot including a meal at the French Laundry accompanied by a bottle of the storied Screaming Eagle cabernet.
The most furious bidding, however, was for an auction lot that will bring no material reward to the bidders.

Quiroga silenced the crowd to seek funding for the Queen’s proposed Youth Fit Zone, designed to treat young people with Type 2 diabetes, at the new Wellness Center. With the opportunity to buy nothing more than the role of key funder of the Youth Fit Zone, some 30 donors stepped forward with gifts ranging from $250 to $20,000, raising some $50,000-plus.

Shortly afterward, the lights came down and performers Clark Sterling, a veteran of the national troupe of “Les Miserables,” and Susan Power, moved among the tables of the ballroom and took to the modest stage as they interpreted the music of the “Phantom.”

After the show, attendees repaired to the deck outside the ballroom for dancing to what “Phantom” composer Andrew Lloyd Webber might call the “music of the night.”
