San Francisco will hold its 96th annual internationally-known footrace, the ING Bay to Breakers 12K, on May 20 starting at 8 a.m. at the intersection of Howard and Main streets. Runners are treated to live music as they make their way 7.46 miles west across the peninsula to the finish line at Ocean Beach.
Early registration thru March 22 is $39 for adults, or $33 for children under 18. Standard registration, from March 23 to May 17, is $44 and $39, respectively. The fee includes a race T-shirt. Seeded and sub-seeded applications must be postmarked by is April 30.
After the race, the annual ING Footstock festival in the Golden Gate Park Polo Fields will feature headliner entertainment, an awards ceremony, a food marketplace and an opportunity to rendezvous and celebrate with family and friends. The festival is free and open to the public.
For the first time, each registered participant will receive a specially created timing chip, the first in a series of five collectible chips leading up to the 100th anniversary of the race. The chips, worn on runners’ shoes, collect data as they compete and will be processed and distributed at the end. Each of the five versions of the chips will commemorate a well-known landmark from the course.
All registered runners will be able to obtain their finishing times on bib stickers at the end of the race and have the opportunity to print out an official finishers’ certificates online.
From its 1912 inception, when it had 122 serious runners, to last year’s race with 70,000 runners, walkers, movers and shakers, the event has become one of the world’s largest and best known footraces.
Festivities begin with the ING Greater Body Expo at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, 99 Grove St. (at Polk). From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 18 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 19, there will be dozens of exhibitors and displays, free samples and prizes, and bargains on apparel and fitness gear. Napa Track Club season begins March 12The Napa Track Club is currently enrolling returning athletes ages 8 to 17 for the conditioning phase of their spring season. This six-week program will begin on March 12 at Harvest Middle School’s all-weather track.
The club is also seeking volunteers with track and field experience who would be interested in providing coaching assistance. NTC strives to provide a quality experience with a high coach-to-athlete ratio. Without additional coaches the club will be unable to expand its current roster to accommodate new participants.
