Younger Indians use team work to get first win in seven years over Crushers
By ERIN LAWLEY, Register Sports Writer
The tables seem to have turned in local high school girls soccer this season.
Until a 0-0 tie last May, Vintage had upended its cross-town rival every time for the past seven years, according to Napa head coach Dave Todd. Soccer fans saw a different kind of game on Saturday afternoon.
The Indians (1-0-1 overall) finally took the win, shutting out the Crushers (1-2 overall) 3-0 at a soggy Raider Field.
“It’s a pleasure to get a win against our cross-town rival, but we still play them three more times,” Todd said. “The kids worked well together. There are kids in positions they’re not used to playing and might not want to play in but they’re doing it because it’s best for the team.”
The rain beat down on the field for most of the morning but lightened up significantly just in time for the game. Though it misted a bit during the game, umbrellas weren’t necessary for fans.
Saturday’s game was a preseason matchup for both teams, which go on to play three times during the Monticello Empire League season.
“I lost a lot of seniors last year,” Vintage head coach Bernie Ochoa said. “We didn’t show up to play. (Napa) scored when they had their opportunities. We just weren’t in it. Napa High just came out and played a hell of a game.”
The Indians jumped ahead 1-0 in the 30th minute when Carli Smith assisted Jessica Beeman, who knocked the ball into the upper right corner of the goal.
Just seven minutes into the second half Devin Whitmill kicked the ball to Smith, whose one-touch pass set up Macy Jo Harrison’s shot for another Napa goal.
“At halftime I spoke to my forwards (Hillary Burns, Rachel Pickett, Smith and Harrison) and told them to play closer together and not so spread out so they could combo-play,” Todd said. “That second goal was an example of quick combo plays.”
Beeman nailed another goal after an assist from Sandy Garcia on a corner kick a couple minutes before the end of the game. Shortly after Napa racked up the 3-0 lead Todd retired Smith and Harrison, who had played the entire game thus far.
The Indians are playing with a young roster this season with just two seniors, though several of their juniors and a couple of sophomores are returning varsity standouts.
The Crushers’ lineup is a bit older, with eight seniors and seven juniors, including varsity returner Robyn Comfort at goalkeeper.
Both defenses stood tough for the first 20 minutes, with the first strong shot on goal coming on a penalty kick by the Indians’ Carly Dowis that resulted from Ariana Gomez’s yellow card for tripping. Kellie Detweiller, Vanessa Jordan and Shana Davis maintained possession for much of the next five minutes, after which Zoe Carroll and Dowis’ shot attempts fueled Napa.
“I really didn’t see much that I liked,” Ochoa said. “We’re 1-2. It’s a bad start, but we have a lot of season ahead of us.”
Napa hosts Rodriguez-Fairfield on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Vintage hosts Bethel on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
