Tax help bus rolling in to town

It’s big, state of the art and rolling into town Saturday to prepare some tax returns at Cope Family Center on Fourth Street.
This e-Bus is equipped with 12 computer stations to help Cope volunteers prepare the tax returns of its clients and non-clients at no cost. For the past three years, Cope has offered this service in the valley said Angela Bettencourt, event coordinator.
“This is the first year we are going to be partnered with health volunteers,” she said. “Children’s Health Initiative, they are going to be here on site. We also have representatives from Health Net (and) Blue Cross ... who can sign up families.”
Cope usually requires its clients to be low-income, or moderate income to take advantage of its services, Bettencourt said, but that the center opens its doors to everyone during tax season for tax preparations. Volunteers are qualified to prepare only basic taxes — they cannot assist residents who own homes or a small business, or have itemizations to do, Bettencourt said.
“We are taking the basic returns and helping the families that need us the most,” she said.
The nonprofit organization saw the need to offer the tax preparations through its finance and parenting classes.
“Part of what Cope does here in Napa is helping educate families and working with families to take better care of their children,” Bettencourt said. “And with such a huge amount of poverty that goes on here, we try to help some of these families get some money back into their pocket.”
Cope also helps individuals who have no Social Security number to declare their taxes.
“People who aren’t able to get a valid Social Security card can do their taxes,” Bettencourt said. “Some people are a little bit wary of it because it involves the IRS, but the IRS doesn’t care if people have Social Security numbers, they just want people to do their taxes and get a better account of how much money is coming into the community and how much is going.”
Cope’s tax preparation event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Cope Family Center, 1340 Fourth St., Napa. Info, 252-1123.
