Ivins right, Bush wrong on Iraq

Dear editor, I was very saddened by Molly Ivins’ death.

She was one of the very few media “personalities” who sharply and clearly analyzed our politicians and presented her conclusions without regard for polls or “spins.” Her death was a great loss to the republic.
Her views on George W. Bush, who she aptly named the “shrub,” were well known. In her last column, she vehemently opposed his Iraq “surge” with biting logic. Bush is desperate over his present position due to the disastrous mess he and his administration have created in Iraq, and I believe he now has two objectives: First, to try and salvage the damning political legacy he knows history will assign him, and second, to prolong our involvement (and losses) in Iraq through 2008 so that the withdrawal of our forces will be left to be done by the next president.

Bush's “surge” scheme was developed toward these objectives. It was not done for the good of the country and certainly not with regard to the well-being of our troops. Congress should take strong action, not ineffectual “resolutions,” to rein Bush in now and save our troops from more wasted death and injury. This will only happen if it becomes clear to the waffling politicians — Democrats as well as Republicans — that, come November of 2008, their fate will depend on their action or inaction to stop Bush now.

" Hmmm...Hillary supported a surge, but changed her position once the President adopted it as policy. A good media personality would have pointed this out, and would not have to resort to offensive names such as "shrub." People like that are the ones keeping us divided. I, for one, am glad to see her go. "

" Joe, wonderful letter, yes, I was also so saddened by Molly's death. She spoke for so many of us who are sick and tired of this president and the destruction he leaves in his wake. As for Patriot, interesting point that you made calling Molly out for nicknaming the Bush, Shrub, and how it divides us...but you are "glad to see her go?" Yep...that's not negative one little bit. Pretty revealing comment if you ask me. Thanks Joe~ "

" Molly was a disgrace, along with all of the other spoiled, name-calling liberals. "

" Oh, come on now, 'Patriot'!?! Nobody on the right feels a whit worried about calling Democratic presidents and presidential candidates all sorts of names offensive to Dems. But you show yourself to be rather uninformed about the name 'shrub'. Mr Bush himself, named a company he ran into the ground before being bailed out by the Saudis, 'Arbusto' which is spanish for 'Shrub or Bush'. Surely you can not be offended by a name that 'shrub' chose himself??? The truth shall set you free, 'Patriot'! 8o) Lefty!!! "

" Thank you, Joe....We must never forget Molly.... she DID speak for many of us. So we should remember her by...speaking out....as she did "WE are the DECIDERS Raise hell....go into the streets banging pots and pans and demanding "Stop it (the war)now" "
