The teen driver who led police on a high-speed chase that ended with a crash on Jefferson Street has been released from the hospital.

The 14-year-old girl, who name was not released because of her age, suffered major internal injuries in the Feb. 2 crash at Jefferson and Trancas streets, police said. She was taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital.
The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation. As of Tuesday, the girl had not been charged with any criminal offenses, the CHP said. After the crash, Napa Police Sgt. John Kostelac indicated the girl could be arrested on suspicion of DUI, evading a police officer, driving without a license and having no insurance.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle the teen was driving when she ran a red light at Jefferson Street and Lincoln Avenue.
The girl punched the accelerator, hitting speeds up to 90 mph with police in pursuit. She lost control of the car and slammed into the traffic pole, causing the Kia sedan to rip into two pieces.

The back half of the Kia caught on fire and the front skidded about 50 feet north, landing on its roof in the World Savings Bank parking lot.
CHP is investigating whether alcohol was involved.

" Wait, wait a minute; was she released into police custody, or just relased? Just let her walk out of the hospital, after that circus of a drive? This "KID" should have her name and mug shot on page one, and be sitting in the slammer right now! "

" Are u serious do you realize that this girl is only 14. Yes she made a big mistake but the good thing is that she didnt cause any damage, besides her self. Give her a break am sure she learn her lesson. "

" I am totally with you mark, her disregard for the public safety, drinking while 7 years under the legal age of 21, probably causing panic to those others on the road. It should be investigated on who would brandish alcohol to her, they need to shake the whole tree. If this had been an illegal they would have sent a lynch mob by now. Make an example out of her or her parents should be held responsible for her actions. "

" THIS "KID" NEEDS TO LEARN FROM WHAT SHE DID. THE "KID" DID CAUSE DAMAGE AND NOT ONLY TO HERSELF. SHE HAD A PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLE WHEN SHE MADE THE CHOICE TO SPEED DOWN THE STREET AT 90MPH, SHE COULD HAVE KILLED HIM. SHE SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FINES AS WELL AS COMMUNITY SERVICE AT LEAST. IF THIS CHILD IS GOING TO DO THIS AT 14 THEN I THINK SHE NEEDS TO BE PUNISHED FOR HER ACTIONS SO MAYBE NEXT TIME SHE WILL THINK ABOUT WHAT SHE IS DOING. IF SHE GETS AWAY WITH THIS YOU NEVER KNOW IT COULD BE SOMEONE IN YOUR FAMILY SHE COULD INJURE OR EVEN KILL ON THE ROAD NEXT TIME. "

" I strongly agree with Mark M. Give her a break??? Please...should we give everyone a break because they didn't do any damage?? How about giving her some community service to complete. Speak at her school to inform others the importance of following RULES!!!! "

" "Learned" you think she LEARNED her lesson, rather like you learned to spell? Napa does have a juvenile justice hall, it would not surprise me in the least if this child was released to her parents custody pending any one of a number of court procedures that will stretch out over the span of several weeks if not months. Keep in mind that the Napa Valley Register, much like a juvenile, has a limited attention span. Perhaps the local newspaper would serve us all better if it could at least note that it will update us on this story, or follow up with a more detailed report with the police and court. It was a circus of a drive, it didn't happen on private property, it was on our streets, Jefferson has postings of 25 - 35mph through out much of downtown. The late night cruising, drag races, speeding, doing donuts at four-way intersections, etc, HAS GOT TO STOP. The only way I know how to be proactive in that is get our police force to pay more attention too. "

" it does not matter if she is 14 or 22. what she did was dangerous and illegel and she knew it. At 14 you know what the law is and she broke it. If you let her go with just a small slap on the wrist what is to stop her from doing this next time or worse having anotehr 14 year old say hey nothing happen to her I'll try it. One problem with today's teenagers is they don't take resposiblity for their actions, and that is our own fault as adults for not making them, maybe we should change that now before another teenager goes on a high speed joy ride and kills someone. "

" "Give her a break am sure she learn lesson"???? Run from the police, almost kill yourself and your passenger and who knows how many bystanders and "get a break"? So you advocate no consequences for her actions; I'm sure that will teach her a lesson. "

" Give the girl a break? You have got to be kidding me! If I were her, I would be begging to go to jail, instead of going home to the wrath my parents would have awaiting me. But, given the fact that her parents probably are partially to blame for this, I think they should have to face some of the consequences for allowing their daughter to behave in such a fashion. Even if she is one of those "uncontrolable kids" there are programs availiable for children like that. There are no excuses for why a 14- year old was behind the wheel of a vehicle. Also, the fact that there 19-year old male in the vehicle with her makes me want to question him as well. There is no reason for a man of that age to be in a vehicle, or anywhere alone, with a young woman of that age. Hopefully the Register will keep us up to date on this, but I doubt it. "

" This 14 yr. old is old enough to know better and she and her parents should be held responsible for her recklessness...in a court of law, a 12 yr. old is old enough to make choices...and investigate the 19 yr. old passenger...as an adult, he should have tried to stop the vehicle some how...by turning the key off and hitting the emergency break...so, obviously, he was a major part of the problem, and should have felony charges against him as well, for numerous violations,i.e. child endangerment, for one...maybe he is a pedophile. He is 19. Now about the parents...if they are allowing a relationship between their 14 yr. old daughter and a 19 yr. old man, they are deranged. "

Just A Stupid Kid wrote on Feb 14, 2007 5:15 PM:

" I gather from reading a lot of the comments that most of you posting are around the age of my parents. Stop for a second with the lynching attitude and look at things again. Shes 14. How many of you did dumb stuff as a teenager. "Let he who is free from sin cast the first stone." This is NOT to say that she shouldn't be punished. But you're mostly acting like a lynch mob from the deep south. We're a respectable community, not a bunch of barbarians. Whos to say the 19 year old with her wasnt a relation of some sort and the names are being kept out to keep all of you from lynching them. Safety from the masses. You should be ashamed. What if this was your little girl or young son? I can't think of a good or moderately decent parent who wouldn't be outraged at this sort of thing. But why are we all looking to blame the parents and point the finger? Did any of you stop to consider she didn't do this for fun? What if she saw the sirens, knew she was already doing something illegal, and paniced. We see it in fictional media all the time where the bad guy gets away in a high speed chase. Also, last I checked, the flight or fight experiance is stronger then logic. I'd like to see any one of you be calm in the face of someone posing threatening authority to you. If you're all so concerned, take it up with the police department and find out whats going on. Go to the hearing or whatever. Be active but be reasonable too. What we have here is only a part of the story. Nothing conclusive, nothing solid. While I'm at it, someone mentioned the drinking thing. How many of you have had a wedding where there was champange everywhere? Glasses get switched, kid drinks the wrong one and just thinks its bad cider because they don't know. Just an idea and its one of thousands of HUMAN possibilities. Or did we forget that part of the equation. But what do I know. I'm just a stupid kid too. "

" It seems to me the police could have set up a barrier instead of having a high speed chase. This girl panicked, police do not need to chase someone especially through a major street and put others in danger. "

Don't worry about it wrote on Feb 28, 2007 8:37 AM:

" Everyone who wrote saying the "Little Girl" needs a break or should not have been chased is why our society is falling apart today. You say you don't want the police to chase but when something goes bad, the police are the first you call. Were the ones putting our lives in danger to make sure your day goes just a little better and to make sure that you can live your life without worrying about being shot in front of your house. If you have complaints, I would like you to go to Richmond or Oakland and stay their for a little while. Why not hang out at 3rd and Market Street in North Richmond. Be thankful the police are there, without them you would have bigger problems. "
