Napa Valley Symphony presents Sir James Galway, Lady Galway
By Register Staff
Flutist Sir James Galway and Lady Jeanne Galway join the Napa Valley Symphony for its second classical concert of 2007 this Sunday at the Lincoln Theater in Yountville.
Galway and the Napa Valley Symphony will perform the “Flute Concerto #2 in D, K. 314” by Mozart, and “The Concerto in G for Two Flutes” by Cimarosa.
A pre-concert lecture, at 2 p.m., features Dr. William Meredith, director of the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies at San Jose State University, who will talk about Beethoven’s Second Symphony.
James Galway, who travels around the world sharing his music at major concert halls, visits the U.S. only two or three times each year.
He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. After mastering the penny whistle, he began serious musical training on the flute. At the age of 10, he was the winner of all three classes of the Irish Flute Championships, which earned him a BBC radio session, as well as a spot in the Belfast Youth Orchestra. He earned scholarships first at London’s Guildhall School of Music, then the Paris Conservatoire.
After spending time at Sadlers Wells, James Galway became the Berlin Philharmonic’s principal flutist in 1969. His time with the orchestra was popular, which led his manager, Michael Emerson, to persuade the flutist to go solo in 1975. He was instantly successful as a solo artist, both as a live performer and a recording artist. He was soon playing 120 concerts a year, as well as recording both classical and popular albums.
His pop recordings were commercially successful, and his classical albums were warmly received by critics and peers alike.
This year James Galway’s European schedule includes appearances at the Musikverein in Vienna, the Salzburg Festival, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the National Concert Hall in Dublin, as well as performances in Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. His tour of the Far East will take him to Japan and Taiwan.
Tickets are $24-$66 for adults, half-price for children/students, and can be purchased by calling 226-8742, or visiting www.napavalleysymphony.org.
