Name-calling has no place in war debate

I read Mr. Joe Turner’s “Your Turn” commentary on Dec. 18, entitled “Democrats are sissies,” with great disappointment.

The term “sissy” itself, according to the dictionary definition, refers to either a timid or cowardly person or a little girl. Obviously, to brand every Democrat in the country as falling into one of these categories is a logical fallacy and discredits the central argument. To use such a pejorative, particularly as it applies to the feminine, would also seem to be an insult to half the human race. That is worthy of deeper examination at another time.
As the word applies to the characteristics of timidity or cowardice, I would respond only by suggesting that anyone subscribing to such a belief should get to know some local Democrats who I am honored to call my friends and personal heroes. These individuals wore the uniform of their nation in Vietnam and know what it is like to be shot at in anger. As I write this, my best friend, a registered Democrat who was awarded the Bronze Star for valor in Iraq, is preparing, like many members of our armed forces, to spend another holiday season deployed overseas. Timidity and cowardice are not words fit to share a sentence with references to these individuals.

Perhaps more importantly, though, Mr. Turner’s letter represents precisely that which is most resented about the stale and mercurial political debate in contemporary America.
Americans are facing a globalized economy, the bifurcated security challenges posed by both an international Jihadist movement and competition from new and potentially multiple emerging super-powers, the dire implications of worldwide climate change, stagnant educational institutions and the challenge of transforming an industrialized economy into a leading-edge information technology-based one.

We have before us the important task of constructing a far more sophisticated, nuanced, interdependent and multi-faceted America than anything history has shown before — a 21st century nation that will project moral, intellectual, economic and military leadership in the face of tests we are only beginning to conceptualize. This calls us to an unflinching examination of world realities, shortcomings in our existing institutions and infrastructures and the rational consideration of nuanced solutions that may not always satisfy one’s visceral partisan desires.
In the face of this worthy challenge, we welcome a debate steeped in the respect and dignity befitting a great nation. Absent that, however, America will gain very little value from name-calling and denigration.

" Matt, where have you been the last few years when the filthy Democrats have called the commander in chief every name in the book, only to be quoted by the very islamic enemy our troop fights, and YOU take offence at being called exactly what you and your party of cut and run, retreit to the rear ARE. " Maybe Joe could have chosen a better term, but he made a good point. Selwyn Duke has an article in the January 23rd edition of American Thinker called "Soft People, Hard People" that expands on this idea. Being "sophisticated, nuanced, interdependent and multifaceted" is going to get a lot of people killed. I highly recommend reading it. "

" MAybe instead of name calling we could all come together and recognize that we have a corrupt and flawed government at all levels on both sides of the political stick. Bush was elected(?) the first time due to Clinton and the Democrats political corruption and the Republicans have been unable to take the high ground instead they have shown themselves to be just as corrupt with different motivations. America is in trouble and has to get going. Let's face it the only way we solve the MIddle East's problems would be to turn it into the world's largest outdoor glass skating rink and start over!!!!!! As a "civilized" nation we aren't going to do that so we had better find a dictator we can support! This petty name calling between democrats and republicans is ridiculous as they have both shown themselves to be morally bankrupt "

" Unbelievable ! __ The president of the Napa Valley Democrats complains about name calling and yet he couldn’t get past his second paragraph before he calls the previous author a sexist ! __ Mr. Pope applies a strategy that has become a tactic by using “nuance” to parse a definition from a third party and then in condemns the speaker with it. Unbelievable ! __ Next, having gotten in your dig, you change the subject and lace in some talking points. __ Perfect. __ Mr. Pope, we all know that you are the smartest kid in the class and that you have an advanced grasp of nuance. So perhaps it can be you who explains : “That depends on what the definition of “IS”, is.”. __ I do hope that you will continue to write in to the paper so that we can “ get to know some local Democrats ” ..... " I hate to say it, but most of my party are in fact sissies. Fortunately, the last election brought in some more common sense Democrats...too bad Pelosi is in charge, though. Also during the last election, we Democrats also lost the white middle-class vote by 6%...this is largely because we have been failing too far left. I hope my party keeps on its trend towards moderation and away from sissiness. "

" Not to worry about Mr Pope, he is just using the Register Letters to get his name and opinions in print in preparation for his run for office. The question the Register should ask is what office is this newcommer preparing to run for? "

" The only religion that can be practiced in America today is marxism. marxism is a religion. It was carried in the back pockets of denim clad "students" in the 1960s. It rules the democrat this very day. The name marx never appeared nor evidenced a signature on any document that gave us our Declaration Of Independence and The Constitution Of The United States Of America. Yet, the considerable amount of Bozos who occupy our legislatures have no clue as to what gave us our nation. The problem that seems to exist is, who else other than a Bozo would run for public office? How can that be remedied? "

" There used to be a great party called the Democrats; However, since the honorable Zell Miller departed the party (actually the party left Zell), the only true old time/style democrat remaining will be Joe Lieberman, and it appears he will be turning off the light after departing this modern day party of filthy anti american clap trap.
