History of a
mountain man

Jerry Nunn, great-great-great grandson of Caleb Greenwood will present Greenwood's life and experiences in the Napa Valley today, 2:30 p.m., at Napa City-County Library. This free event is hosted by the Napa County Historical Society. Info, 224-1739.
Good citizen award ceremony

Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter will hand out American History, Good Citizen and Christopher Columbus awards on Wednesday, 3:30-5 p.m. in the NVUSD board room.

Circle time workshop

Community Resources for Children (CRC) presents a Circle Time Workshop for child care providers and preschool teachers. Circle time is a wonderful opportunity for children to play games in a group, learn to take turns, sing songs, hear stories and more. This interactive workshop will demonstrate how to make circle time a productive learning experience for children. Napa Valley Genealogical & Biographical Society

The Napa Valley Genealogical & Biographical Society holds its afternoon monthly meeting Thursday, 1 p.m., at Senior Citizen Center, 1500 Jefferson St., Napa. The guest speaker is Dolores Hibbert, former librarian for the genealogical society. She will describe her Internet research that reunited two brothers, both in their 70s, after one brother was adopted away from the family as an infant. Info, 253-7447.

Drop-in day for dropouts

As part of a statewide effort by California Adult Schools to reach adults without a high school diploma, Napa Valley Adult School will participate in the Drop-in Day for Dropouts on Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Free, private, individual high school diploma counseling will be provided on a walk-in, no appointment basis. Senior seminars

Napa Community College's Wellness Seminar for Seniors offers a seminar on Peripheral Arterial Disease on Friday, 9 a.m., and a seminar entitled "Ed and his Accordion" at 10:15 a.m. Come to any Friday morning class to sign up. Seminars are held at the Senior Center on Jefferson Street in Napa every Friday morning, 9-11 a.m.

Celiac support group

ParentsCAN workshop

ParentsCAN and Protection and Advocacy Inc., present a workshop in Spanish on updates and new regulations regarding respite services for families receiving North Bay Regional Center services. It will be held on Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3299 Claremont Way. Child care business practices training course

Community Resources for Children will present a free comprehensive five-week course on how to run a successful child care business and solve common problems. Topics include income and expenses, policy and contracts, record-keeping and marketing. Leah McNally, a former preschool teacher and child care center director, will be the presenter. Alzheimer's education

Adult Day Services of Napa Valley's Alzheimer's Day Care Resource Center offers free educational events addressing issues for caregivers of people with dementia or Alzheimer's disease starting on Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. at 414 South Jefferson St., Napa. Support groups for caregivers

A Wednesday evening group co-sponsored by Adult Day Services of Napa Valley and Queen of the Valley Hospital meets 6-8 p.m. in the Hospice Community Room, 414 South Jefferson St., Napa. Fitness for two

Cancer support group

St. Helena Hospital's Women's Center sponsors a cancer support group led by a breast cancer survivor and psychologist every third Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. at the Women's Center, 1299 Pine St., St. Helena. Info, 963-1912.

Quit smoking today

The Community Quit Smoking Program offers a structured classroom setting, nicotine replacement products and therapies and support for people who want to become non-smokers. Senior Care Directory

The 2007 Napa County Senior Care Directory is now available for seniors, family members, caregivers and others interested in the care of the aging populations. The directory, published by Born to Age, also contains cost comparisons of home care nursing services, area mortuaries, assisted living and retirement homes and information on caring for aging parents, financing long term care and services available in the community. The Born to Age Senior Care Directory is free at area libraries, senior centers and hospital lobbies. for Napa shelter project

Team in Training

Train for a marathon (run or walk) triathlon or 100-mile cycling event while raising money to help people with blood cancer. Academic Booster Club

All day on Jan. 17, 24 and 31, when you shop and eat at Christopher's Fine Foods, 1249 Napa Town Center, 15 percent of sales go to the Napa High School Academic Booster Club when you hand them a flyer. Flyers can be picked up in the Napa High School office or downloaded from nhs.nvusd.k12.ca.us under "Parents Club." On Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., 15 percent of all food sales at Compadres in Yountville go to the Napa High School Academic Booster Club. Be sure to tell them you are with Napa High.

Irene Snow Elementary pavers

Irene Snow Elementary School recently dedicated the new multi-purpose room. We have designated two areas where we will be selling brick pavers, to be permanently displayed on school grounds. Walk for Life

Napa residents can Walk for Life in San Francisco Saturday by signing up for bus transportation from Napa. Buses will leave from the St. Apollinaris Church parking lot at 3700 Lassen St. at 9:15 a.m. and drop people off at the walk's starting point near Justin Herman Plaza. The buses will pick people up at the walk's ending point near the Marina Green and return to Napa around 5 p.m. Call Nancy or Ron Maxson at 226-1350.

Napa Elks Lodge meeting

The next meeting of the Napa Elks Lodge, a charitable organization, is at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The annual Crab Feed and Silent Auction Fundraiser are on Jan. 27 at 5 p.m., with the J. Israel consul general

visits Napa

Israel's consul general for the Pacific Northwest, David Akov, comes to Congregation Beth Sholom, 1455 Elm St., today, 4-6 p.m. Akov will discuss the many outside threats to Israel's existence. The public is invited to this free event and refreshments will be served.

MLK Commemoration

The Napa Interfaith Council hosts Napa County's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration today, 6 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 625 Randolph St., Napa. The celebration of King's life will feature Napa County Court Commissioner Monique Langhorne-Johnson and choirs from the Union Baptist Church and Vintage High School. It will be a community-wide gathering of people from all faiths to celebrate a time when one person made a difference and changed our world. A dessert reception will follow. Info, 226-7127.

Drumming for peace
