Medeiros’ last-minute layup lifts NVC over Alameda
The Napa Valley College men’s basketball team held the lead Wednesday night until College of Alameda tied things up with 17 seconds on the clock. Andy Medeiros nailed a reverse layup to give the Storm the lead, which they held on to win 61-59 on the road.
Medeiros and Jerald Pruitt scored NVC’s final 12 points together help keep the Storm’s lead in the Bay Valley Conference contest.
Medeiros led NVC with 21 points, including five 3-pointers, while Malcom Ackridge (12 points), John Heath (11 points) and Pruitt (eight points) rounded out the top scorers.
The Storm (4-2 BVC, 7-13 overall) play at Los Medanos College-Pittsburg on Friday at 7 p.m.
Varsity Boys
• St. Helena 48, Lower Lake 41
Jake Holguin and Dre Gomes led the way for St. Helena’s Tuesday night win over the Trojans at home.
Holguin banked a 3-pointer from halfcourt as the first-half horn sounded. Holguin’s trey tied the game at 24-all at halftime.
Holguin tallied 21 points to lead the Saints (4-12 overall) while Gomes had a monster game with 14 points and 23 rebounds.
As a team, the Saints outbounded Lower Lake 40-25 with Gomes nearly grabbing as many rebounds as Lower Lake’s entire team. Austin Saladin added seven points and five rebounds while Jason Micheli generated four steals.
St. Helena will visit Clear Lake on Friday.
• Kendell Prep 54,
Napa Christian 46
Freshman Joey Williams had the game of his career Tuesday night, scoring 26 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and blocking two shots.
“He really came out of his shell,” Knights coach Steve Lawrence said. “I’m not sure where it came from.”
Kurt Shavlik added seven boards and Jesse Neale chipped in four steals.
• Fairfield 75, Vintage 45
The Crushers were only down 31-23 at halftime, but deteriorated in the second half. Will Temple scored 12 points while Kip Kendall and Vince Pappas added eight each. Darrell Miller grabbed 10 rebounds and chipped in five points while A.J. Eisiminger scored seven points.
Varsity Girls
• Lower Lake 40, St. Helena 37
St. Helena led 37-35 entering the final two minutes of the fourth quarter Tuesday night but Lower Lake scored the game’s final five points to drop the Saints to 6-9.
Katie Mittelstadt led the Saints with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Kelsea Jimenez scored eight points while Meagan Densberger added seven points in the defeat.
The Saints held an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, the Trojans led 16-12 at halftime and increased their advantage to 26-20 entering the fourth quarter. But the Saints responded with a 17-9 run to capture the lead before Lower Lake countered with the decisive spurt.
St. Helena hosts Clear Lake on Friday.
JV Boys Basketball
• St. Helena 46, Lower Lake 42
The Saints clinged to a 43-42 lead with 8.1 seconds left and Lower Lake, which hit seven 3-point field goals, had the ball. Morgan Densberger then got a steal, raced to the other end of the court for a layup, got fouled and made the ensuing free throw to put an exclamation point on the win with 0.9-seconds remaining.
John Gehrke led the Saints (3-10 overall) with 16 points and nine rebounds. Jeff Quirici added eight points. John Densberger added five rebounds and five steals while Will Saladin added five rebounds and four steals.
The Saints visit Clear Lake Friday night.
• Justin-Siena 48, Novato 26
The Braves were led by Kevin Cardey with nine points, Michael Lohwasser with eight points and Michael Bozzini with seven.
Justin-Siena stands at 13-2 overall, 3-1 in the Marin County Athletic League. It hosts Redwood on Friday.
