Lang Lang Jan. 19
Hailed as one of the most exciting keyboard talents to emerge in many years, 24-year-old Chinese pianist Lang Lang has quickly risen to become one of the true superstars of classical music. His extraordinary technical facility and ability to connect with audiences have led to performances with the world’s greatest orchestras and recitals in the most prestigious halls. Studio Jazz Series Jan. 23-27
Joey DeFrancesco was born to play the Hammond organ. At age 4, he got his first lesson on the instrument from his father, “Papa” John DeFrancesco, who played regularly around Philadelphia during the 1960s, and went on to learn from masters such as Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff. A former Miles Davis sideman, DeFrancesco is widely recognized as a master of groove-oriented organ jazz in the Jimmy Smith tradition. He brings his trio, featuring guitarist Jacob Andrew Langley and drummer Byron Christopher, to the intimate confines of the Studio Theatre at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts for a series of performances Jan. 23-27, each beginning at 8 p.m., in the Mondavi Center’s Studio Theatre on the UC Davis campus.

Bobby McFerrin Jan. 26
Bobby McFerrin, the 10-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist with a four-octave range and a vast array of innovative techniques, will return to UC Davis with his unique improvisational chant group Voicestra. The event begins at 8 p.m., Jan. 26 in Jackson Hall.

The group has collaborated with musical legends including Van Morrison and the Rolling Stones, won six Grammy Awards and established itself as the most enduring and influential creative force in contemporary Celtic music. A longtime favorite of local audiences, the Chieftains will return to the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, joined by six guest musicians and the six-member all-female Celtic music group Líadan  8 p.m. on Jan. 31 in Jackson Hall.
