A different drug problem

Dear editor, A short while ago I heard of a pharmacy in Napa with headquarters in Northern California that was delivering prescriptions to your home at no charge.

Being a senior citizen, I jumped at the chance and transferred 10 of our medications over to them.
Last week, the manager told us that he could not fill one of our medications called Provacol (generic name is Pravastatin), the reason being that the company is not covering any drugs that are not profitable, and ours is one of them. He said for us to have it filled at another local drugstore pharmacy.

I believe that the drugstore should put public service ahead of greed. Bah Humbug!

" The drugstore is a for profit business that happens to deal in health care. It cannot survive if it doesn't turn a profit. Public service may readily be found in the government arena wherein profits are not as necessary as breathing. Maybe you should try the housing authority. They seem to have a surplus of funds up for grabs; perhaps they can fund a free drug delivery service? They might say that it's needed to bring upvalley workers' health up to code in order for them to inhabit the newly renovated housing. You may also have to pretend to BE an upvalley worker to benefit from the city's largesse, but that shouldn't be too difficult. "

" What a great idea! And why should it just be pharmacies? How about auto dealers or furniture stores? They don't need to make a profit. Grocery stores? Everybody needs groceries, now there would be public service! By the way, Jim, what field of business do YOU work in? "

" How funny. How lazy can you be. Why not just go to an old folks home so that you don't have to get up to pee either! Profits need to be made in order for a business to survive, but then again, learning that takes energy... Sorry to lead you on. "

" It may be shocking, but Pharmacies are in the business of making money. I used to be a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep, and many pharmacies I called on, would not order my medication because the reimbursement from Medicare was not enough. Instead, they will substitute a generic brand, which sometimes for many reasons, may not be the best for the patient. Endless Pharmacies across the country are closing shop for those reasons. Wake up - it's a business! "

" Nothing like having to spoon-feed and coddle these people! By the way, studies have shown that walking is VERY good for senior citizens. "

" I also had the same experience with a local pharmacy that I have been doing business with for many years. Some of you people have to realize that people on a fixed income have to watch their expenses. Did you ever think that maybe Jim is handycaped somehow and can't walk long distances. Did you think that maybe he has a spouse to take care of and can't leave to get his medicines. Our income stays the same and our medical bills keep on the rise. Where is your Christmas sprit. Jim go to Longs. They seem to appreciate senior business. "

" If the guy needs help he should go to social services. Otherwise in my view the world and Napa is too full of people looking for a hand out, feeling entitled to have someone else pay their way. Your life is your responsibility. And you know what, odds are you can afford to pay for that drug. The reason we have so many modern drugs that are so effective is because of profits. If you take away profits you take away all the drugs, and business altogether. It's econ 101. "

" Especially during the holiday season...I always try to give a dollar or two whenever I walk by a red kettle...but it adds up quick. I'm tired of the people standing on the corner holding signs wanting food or money. I saw the same guy traveling to different fast food exits begging for food. How about getting a few bucks and taking the bus down to the shelter and getting help? "
