Democrats, diplomats and real leadership

Dear editor, I would like to comment on Joe Turner’s Your Turn commentary published on Dec. 18, titled “Democrats are sissies.”

He begins by stating that he differentiates between traditional and modern Democrats — of course, the examples of the latter being Kennedy, who he mentions was a philanderer; followed by Clinton, again, a philanderer (yawn); Kerry, a liar and a coward; and, of course, Gore, “the current incarnation of Joseph McCarthy.” I can’t even begin to read Mr. Turner’s mind and wonder why he makes this comparison, so I will just have to assume that he means to expose Gore as a liar-liar-pants-on-fire type of fellow for his pesky research and dedication to the threat of global warming. Sadly, his letter continues to highlight other Democratic leaders, namely Pelosi, Feinstein, Boxer and Murtha (a true-blue war hero) as he colors them as sissies, whiners, selfish unlikable louts and cut-and-runners. This is rich when you consider the president’s current approval numbers for how he is handling the war with Iraq, which is at 28 percent and dropping. Perhaps the author believes that tough guys can actually bring about democratic systems with brawn. However, I have always believed that although bullies and ruffians may think they are righteous, in the end, they cannot dominate. People who engage their brains and make every effort to use diplomacy are the authentic leaders. From a member of the remaining 72 percent of Americans who are fed up with our current administration and wish to bring our troops home, I salute his determination to stick with the president to the cold, deadly and bitter end. Most alarming of all, the writer insists there were indeed weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, although I personally have read or heard about a thousand times now that this is not the case. I’m quite curious about where he gets this information and why he urges us to “ask the Kurds or the Iranians.” How do you suppose we go about this, and will I need to bring along my tin-foil hat? Mr. Turner then tries to legitimize this war by quoting Trotsky: “You might not be interested in war but war is interested in you.” Well, right back at you, sir, with a quote by that fiend Kennedy you have such contempt for: “Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind.”

" Very idealistic, Julie. Remember, they can't break you if you don't have a spine. I'm sure that if there were a way to stop war, we would have figured it out by now. I prefer to stay in reality so that I can minimize the chances of my children getting drafted for a bigger war caused by our premature pullout in Iraq. We need to stand our ground against Islamo-fascism, or we will lose everything...let's hope the Democrats understand this. "

" Julie, please try to read some newspapers (other than the Napa Valley Register) once in a while. And you won't even need the tin foil hat. The trial of Saddam has been documenting in great detail his use of chemical weapons against his own people (the Kurds) and the Iranians. Its no wonder there is such a schism in this country over the war in Iraq, when people have two completely different views of history. The world spent 12 years trying to get Saddam to verify with inspections that he no longer had WMDs. For whatever political reasons, he decided to hide the evidence that the WMDs were destroyed or moved out of the country. After 9-11 the President and Congress decided we could no longer tolerate the possibility that these weapons could end up in terrorist's hands and they authorized the war. And our troops have accomplished that mission: we now know Iraq is not a threat to the US from unaccounted for WMD's. In my opinion, our troops have done a spectacular job. Who would have imagined that in over 3 years of conquering and occupying one of the most powerful Muslim countries in heart of the Middle East they would have less than 3,000 casualties? Remember all those retired generals on CNN talking about 20,000 or even 30,000 American casualties just to capture Baghdad? I wish you had included some examples of great diplomats: the only one that comes to my mind is Neville Chamberlain... "

" Common sense I hope your kids get drafted and you have to wait once a month to get a letter from them. If you support the war why not give more of your money? Why not your children? Oh because other peoples children are fighting it for you. Fascism? Isn't that what we do when other countries do not want our democracy? We force our will upon them much like fascists do? Do yourself a favor and watch the "Loose Change" video. You can google it or youtube it. If your spine doesn't chill then post back up here and make your point. War is not in human nature or else our children would come out of the womb fighting and killing. They don't. They LEARN it. "

" Why haven't you volunteered your children? Better yet, the service is revising its age, physical, mental and moral requirements to accommodate our nation's needs. This is intended to attract just such super patriots as yourself, should you chose to avail yourself of the opportunity to have your actions match your words. "

" Colon, you need help. I've served in the Middle East, and before that I was as naive and idealistic as you. I was there because nobody (particularly the Europeans and the UN) had the courage to enforce UN Resolution 687 that was supposed to end the first Gulf War, and our troops were left to pick up the pieces. I have family over there now. We're doing our part while you sit around showing the world your naive liberalism and undermining our troops. As for your attempt at history, I challenge you to find any credible evidence that war is not in human nature...the archaeological evidence clearly shows just the opposite. Sure, it would be nice if we could just make war illegal and never have to deal with it again. However, there are many fantasies we have that reality prevents. The ironic thing is that liberals such as yourself are enabling the Islamo-fascists, who are your exact political opposites. Where is your head, Colon? "

" Not good enough Mr. common sense. You are not protecting us, no excuses. Been there done that will not suffice. You cannot cavalierly make throw away statements about defending our rights and liberties as if we ware sheep. It is your sound and fury with which you are enamored. You have no right to insist that you and your stripe alone stand against the evil in the world. It is a tale only the credulous believes. You would commit this generation and the next to your own special crusade, jihad and holy war. No excuses sign up. I will not bore you further with who tells a tale full of sound and fury and what it signifies. "

" I support Islam? You must be high on what ever it is you are smoking. Just because a person chooses NOT a path of violence and chooses NOT to be a sheep LIKE YOU, it does not make them a supporter of such things. If that was the case you are a supporter of the devil and his doings, KILLING brothers and sisters around the world in the name of $$. I wish that I lived in such a world because then me and my family would not have to deal with setups like this. Why don't you get our of your Fox news cacoon, off of Bill OReillys feet and become a free thinking American who looks past the BS. I and BTW, I served. Scarlet and Gold, Operation Iraqi Freedom. "

" Lately the big insult by some people here on the blogs is. "I hope your kids get drafted", Or "Why don't you join up" ,and "Send your family over there". Sad isn't it? They don't seem to realize that many of us who are vocal about terrorism, and the war have done just that, or have kids and family in the military. We do get it, and we know the sacrifice, more than many of them. They can't fathom why anyone would fight for the rights this country grants us. They can't be bothered to learn about Islamo terrorists beyong the surface that is reported on the news. God Bless all of our soldiers and the families of them. Some of us appreciate the sacrafices and would never wish anyones family to be in harms way. Thank you all, and thank you to my son who volunteered last April. We are so proud of the man you have become. "

" It never ceases to amaze me how many bogus conspiracy theories are out there. Whether invading Iraq was a good idea or not, there are people who do not think like we do. They would peel the skin off your face like an orange just for fun. Saddam used to sit around watching films of his torture victims being tortured as his evening entertainment. We did not invade Iraq for oil, it was for terrorism. I think it was a huge mistake, but the wacko's peddling these conspiracy theories have no proof to back up their claims. The big oil companies could have gotten the oil without a war, and in fact they were getting it. Now they have to pay to rebuild Iraq's oil producing infrastructure. Think they wanted that? No way. " We broke it.Let's not leave before we do what we can to fix it or at least make things better.Rememer the killing fields of Cambodia and Viet Nam when the democrats of the day just decided to quit and go home? I'll bet you would if you lived in the daily terror of the struggle just to keep from becoming one of the millions of dead. But all the hippies smiled and smoked their joints and listened to their Grateful Dead records, giving the peace sign and slapping each other on the back because we weren't in 'Nam anymore. The same voices are speaking up again just telling us to pack up and go home,Kerry,Kennedy,Kucinich(the liberal KKK). Only this time if we turn and run the terror will surely follow us home as it will be taken as a sign of weakness. It must be great to live in America in the comfort of your big warm house where you can get on the internet and tell the rest of the world to get lost becuase you don't like war.Who cares if millions of people "somewhere else" die? It certainly didn't matter much in Viet Nam when we signed the death warrants of millions because we let mad men win. As long as you can pat yourself on the back becuase war is bad and Bush is bad and you have the right bumper sticker on your car.You can drive your Prius down to the coffee house where other people will gather to tell you what a great person you are.Meanwhile millions die and pretty soon Los Angeles or New York will go up in a mushroom cloud.Hey, but at least Bush is stupid, right? And no war for oil either.Do you feel better now? "

" Primarily, this is not really a war. The element of demoralizing the enemy has not been employed. Negotiating with the enemy is is a sign of weakness as well as a lack of resolve. "
