‘Jersey Boys’ tops list of Bay Area holiday theater offerings
By Register Staff
Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of phenomenal Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the award-winning Broadway musical “Jersey Boys” answers the musical and philosophical question, “How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, N.J., become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?”
Winner of the 2006 Tony Award for best Broadway musical, “Jersey Boys” celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi who, as the Four Seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity and sold 175 million records worldwide — all before they were 30.
The national tour of the popular Broadway documentary-style musical kicked off in San Francisco. Opening to both audience and critical acclaim, the Bay Area engagement has been extended through March 25 at the Curran Theater.
The national company stars Christopher Kale Jones as Frankie Valli, Erich Bergen as Bob Gaudio, Michael Ingersoll as Nick Massi and Deven May as Tommy DeVito.
Part concert, part jukebox musical, the 2 1/2-hour show includes such Four Seasons hits as “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Sherry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Oh, What a Night” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”
“Jersey Boys” is directed by two-time Tony Award winner Des McAnuff. Winning a total of four Tony Awards this past June, the show is written by Academy Award winner Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with music by Bob Gaudio, lyrics by Bob Crewe and choreography by Sergio Trujillo.
Performance schedule is Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Ranging in price from $30 to $90, tickets can be purchased online at www.shnsf.com or ticketmaster.com, by calling 415-512-7770.
